Fleeing teen from CA shows up in Midwest at Stranger's Door

Zynull ๐Ÿšซ

Years ago, I read a story where a teen girl from California shows up at the Midwest door of male Stranger. She gives the Stranger a postcard from one of his female college classmates who knows the teen. She's running from her father who is a (San Francisco?) cop. The postcard has some Star Wars or similar reference. The stranger takes her in and a romance develops.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

Can't remember the name of the story, but I remember reading it. If I remember correctly, the protagonist (the male) lived in St. Louis or nearby.

Yes... now that you mention it, I do believe it was in St. Louis.

I think it was The Runaway by Geek of Ages ... that being said, the story was told from the male's POV and was quite a decent read. The author was posting another version of the story from the teen girl's POV and was less than a third of the way through the events of the original story when we (SOL readership) got notification that he was pulling all of his stories from the site. Happened a few years ago and I don't remember if the author ever explained why or not.

Geek of Ages left the site because of hostility here in the Forum. I can't remember who he was unhappy about - and I think it was more than one person - or the other details, but that was the reason he gave.
As to when, the very end of March 2018. He announced his departure here and - afaik - the threads are still here.

Another author from St Louis (I believe) is https://storiesonline.net/a/woodmanone and some of his stories are set there.
https://storiesonline.net/universe/685/the-adventures-of-private-eye-matt-steele or (more probably) https://storiesonline.net/universe/645/the-adventures-of-the-crusader would be the places to look. It's been over 10 years since I read them. Sheesh.

ahh.. I remember it happening, but the years seem to blend together and hard to pinpoint specific spots unless it is a personally important event. And I thought it might have been for the reason you said, but since I couldn't remember for sure I decided to be cautious with my response. Thanks for clarifying!

It's sad when that happens. I think it's hard enough to write and then put your stories out there for comment. Sometimes the critics are pretty unfeeling. I try to remember that when commenting, but I have to confess I've had my lapses over the years. The result? Another good story lost in the internet.

My impression was that the attacks came from other authors. Silverhawk left the site on - I believe - the same day but I never found out if that was related.

It's so strange that authors would attack others. I just never imagined it.

Thanks again to everyone who helped with my search!

I think it's hard enough to write and then put your stories out there for comment.

It's not even the writing criticism that's necessarily the problem. There are certain people who are active on the forums who will argue every little detail about things they know nothing about in discussions they weren't a part of.

It gets really draining and drives a lot of people off the forums. Some of them leave the site entirely.

@Dinsdale

Thank you for the suggestion for more Midwest stories.

10 years and you still remember... nice!

That name sounds very familiar. Thank you for your quick reply!

Interesting that he pulled his stories. I'll have to do some other searching.

Thanks!
