It might be Gorillas in the Mist by Robin or on of that authors other stories.

This is one of two almost identical stories with slightly different titles posted to a.s.s back in the 90s. One was clearly a rewrite of the other with more details to flesh it out. This kind of rewrite was common and allowed in a.s.s culture.
The original version is Incident at the Zoo. I'm not sure who originally wrote it, but it's part of the Red Dragon Collection, which was a massive repost of stories done by a user of that name in 1995. I know there's a copy in Welsh Dragon's collection on ASSTR and I think there might be a copy in Libertine's collection as well.
However, this is not the longer version that you're remembering. Other collections you might check would be Kristen's and Old Joe's. I think it was on Mr. Double's site back in the day, but that site is now dead and the site operator jailed in Texas.
