Started a story a while back about a kid who meets his future self, future self gives him nanotechnology to rebuild his younger self; upon returning to his own time, the future self finds himself unknown to the scientists and military people that run the time machine.
First of all just wanted to say thank you for reading and remembering my story. But something kind of threw me for a loop in the description you gave because that description is of the side of my story that 99% of my email has been telling me is the part they are not liking of my story.
Since you could remember that part of the story tells me that maybe there is a silent majority of readers out there who do enjoy that side of the story. I mean I enjoy both the visiting the future with Fat Tim and I also enjoy seeing how the life of this boy is changing after receiving this life altering gift.
Huh.
Get me thinking. But don't worry, I will continue the story and someday I will finish it or at least pause it to get to another story since I find myself seeing many more ideas and I want to visit those.

As part of that silent majority your story is going well. The complainers are just impatient for you to explain the cut on young Tim being passed forward but not the physical changes... Or just jerks, that's always a possibility.
I was reading it as well but did not understand why he was still fat in the future if he took the pills and should have changed the future. following that thought why was he still working as a guard for the place if his future should have been changed so he didn't need to work there?
He probably created another timeline.
Since the fat tim left his original timeline to go back to the timeline of the young tim and came back to the wrong timeline.

Hey, we've all watched enough movies to understand the process: put on a lab coat, carry a notepad, do 5 minutes of research, cause a few electrical sparks and wallah! You've accomplished time travel (or was that bringing the dead back to life, or creating a portal to another dimension?).
Who wants to read about boring research when instant results are so much easier to fake?

If you know enough physics, there are some theories regarding time-travel which might be viable, but none of them are particularly useful for fiction. For example, Stephen Hawking has suggested that time travel might only work in a region of spacetime which is warped in a specific way, and that the warping might only be possible with a working time machine. Thus future time-travellers would only be able to go back in time as far as the point where the first time machine was invented.
I recall seeing an article about 20 years ago in which a team from MIT developed a model which might allow backwards time travel. The process involved putting a particle into a degenerating, funnel-shaped orbit around a high-gravity point like a black hole, then accelerating the particle such that it reached light speed at the same time it crossed the event horizon. Estimates were that it would require the energy output of our entire GALAXY to do this with a single PROTON.
So, not really useful unless you're writing a space opera with a really advanced alien species.

As I recall the story the future fat Tim wasn't fat at all. He was very large and solid like a brick so at first look appeared fat.
