been rereading stoker's dracula for halloween. which reminded me of a story set just after the original novel.
the follow up investigation by scotland yard began with the knowledge that there is no such thing as vampires. Lucy's death was caused by one of her rejected suitors, who, through drugs convinced the others that the death was by a vampire and the witch hunt (well vampire hunt) began.
any idea who wrote this?
It doesn't ring a bell, but alternate-Dracula stories are neither new nor rare.
The books that always jump to mind are Fred Saberhagen's series that began with The Dracula Tape (1975). That was more retelling the book from Dracula's POV and rewriting the ending, though.
that's the problem, there are thousands and thousands of dracula stories.
this story was the only one i've read using the original characters but there was no real vampire. that's why it is itching away at the back of my head...
