diagnosed with something like ADD in school

PotomacBob 🚫

I read this story a few years ago on SOL.
A part of the story is set in school (high school, probably) and the MC is having trouble concentrating. His mind wanders. Not sure what prompted it, but he is diagnosed with ADD (or something like it) and given pills to take, which causes him to get worse. Somebody in school system decides to test him, and asks him to stop taking the pills before he takes the test. The test shows he did NOT have ADD, but was simply bored in class because what he was studying was beneath his capabilities. I do not recall what happened after that. My assumption is that they must have assigned him more difficult classes.
It is possible this is a long, long story and what I just described is only a tiny portion of it.
Ring a bell for anybody?

That story starts off with Alex having great difficulties staying awake. Tests show a growth on his brain and it is removed through surgery. After that we have: Hyperactive Alex, someone bored with school.
Someone wants to give him some pills to slow him down but his parents are reluctant and since he is ahead - and then w-a-a-y ahead - of where he should be in school, they leave well alone. He sits at the back in classes, reading, but answers teacher's questions without missing a beat.

In other words, similar but probably not what you are looking for.
