I started to read a newer story a few months ago. The main character was a guy who worked for a company that cloned pets but he ends up cloning his deceased girlfriend, a coworker dying of cancer, and 2 other women. Thought the title was "my 4 girlfriends" or something like that.

It started off really strong and I was super excited because it had tons of potential, then it hit a weird patch where the author wrote himself into a corner and (IMO) lost excitement about his own story in favor of a newer project. It ended okay, but didn't live up to its full potential.
That's the problem with publishing serials. If you decide you goofed up two chapters earlier, it's hard to scratch it and start over.

Only with publishing unfinished serials. Quite some authors here are publishing their finished stories as serials. (One chapter every other day, one chapter twice a week, one chapter weekly, ...).
Others publish while still writing, but have a large buffer of chapters to publish. They can easily scratch some of the already written but still to publish chapters and start over.
