it's a long time since I read it, but the story "Accidental Commander" came to mind.
Sadly that is still incomplete.

I believe the story you are referring to was written by an Author named Ellagon. It was part of a trilogy of which I think the title of the second book as "Raptor Squadron". I can't for the life of me remember the first or third books title, off hand, though I do remember the town on earth they used as a base was named Talos, which was the name of the planet the ship originally came from

I believe the author changed his name to something like Sir Winston and then removed all his stories from any site I have frequented. I have no idea where you can find any of his stories which was a shame as they where excellent stories.

If it is one of Winston's books you'll find them at the site below. He got banned from SoL and a few other sites for posting only part stories which he never completed and then directing people to where they could buy the finished book. Posting teasers is against the site policy, while he would have been OK if he posted the whole story.

I have noticed and believe its okay to reference other stories that for contract reasons can not be posted like some of your stories. You tend to mention those in your blog here and I find those type notices very well done. Definitely not a tease just information on stories you are not allowed to post, but are still available.

Doc, The stories I had under contract restrictions are now all out of contract and I'm in the process of revising them and posting them here at SoL. It's always been OK with the SoL rules to reference the title of another story within a story or a blog, as long as it wasn't an outright advertisement to go buy that specific title elsewhere. Lazeez doesn't mind if you sell the story on another site and mention it at SoL, as long as the full story is available at SoL. Which is what I, and a few others, do. In my case I post the first chapter and wait until it's through the Wizard, and then post the other chapters for display at later dates - this is because posting the other chapters is a lot easier once the first one is in the system. That way SoL has the full story on their servers straight away. I also post the full story at Lulu for those who can't wait, they can buy it. Because SoL has the full story I'm not posting a teaser as part of a bait and switch activity, which Lazeez hates, and people who do it get banned.

Mind you, he doesn't seem to mind other sites etc being mentioned in the forum when people are looking for stories. But that's very different to having a part story on the main site.

That is why I said your blog. You do not post partial stories with a link to another site so the story can be bought. That was what Sir Winston was doing, if I remember correctly. The chapters he posted here were to get the readers to go and purchase the stories from the other site. Yours and CW's make no bones about them being available in book format from another site as a purchase, even as they are posted here. That is not a tease. Its an option that supports the individual writer while still making the story available here. Your time line story for the Amir series mentioned those that were available to be purchased but they could not be posted at that time. Sure as the contracts expire or change you post those as well. None of that is a tease in any way at all. It just shows facts without making a purchase mandatory.

Actually, I post the whole story at lulu when it goes up at SoL so I don't have to deal with all the people emailing me to ask to post more frequently than every other day. If they're in a hurry for the whole story they can buy it as an e-pub or a print book. What I do find interesting si the number of people that buy the e-pubs as gifts for others, after they read the full story at SoL.

That works as well. I hope you noticed that I liked you and CW's honest approach about it.

A tease is where someone posts a portion and then forces the reader to purchase the story. In my opinion that is pure blackmail and of course as everyone knows blackmail tends to backfire.

@Ernest Bywater

That is the writer I am thinking of. Looking at the link I see the first story was "Star Dancer".

rustyken ๐Ÿšซ

I believe the story has been published by Ben Winston. The first story is now titled: Olympus (Talosian Chronciles Book 1. I saw it as a Kindle book. What I saw in the preview reminded me of the book I read here, however I have not done any cross checking. I believe I do have the original as I tend to save what I read.

Cheers

are the full and complete stories or the usual half a story he used to post?

I believe only part of the story is published there. Star Dancer is the only 1 I read and goes as far as him being made Admiral which seems to leave a lot untold.

In that case, thanks for helping promote teaser posts. I was initially attracted to Sir Winston's writing, but his unethical behavior and his refusal to back down in the face of unfavorable responses has put him on my 'do not read' list.

It's fairly easy to write six successful chapters, but much harder to successfully finish a story. As far as I've seen, he's never finished any (aside from the report he's published a single book).

I didn't mean it as a personal attack, I was merely pointing out that you were unintentionally promoting 'teaser' stories by pointing readers at incomplete stories the author expects them to pay to read (the larger incomplete story). I've long promoted the benefit of reading successful 'inactive' stories, but I've never been fond of reader blackmail ("Pay up or you'll never read any more of this story!").

But yeah, I'm emotional, so I often go off on tangents (as everyone here has noted over time).

no problemo. I do the same :)

I have no problem with him wanting to make money for his work though like you say, I don't like the "got to pay to read the rest" either. Even if he would have posted the complete version after sales slumped...

Star Dancer is the only 1 I read and goes as far as him being made Admiral which seems to leave a lot untold.

If the plot in Star Dancer, as posted there, is complete and it's just missing the rest of the stories in the series, that means it has a lot more than he posted at SoL. However, from posts he made in various forums he heavily revised the whole series about 4 or 5 years ago, so if those files are older than, say 2010, then it's the old unrevised story, however much of it is there.

Whatever happened to Apache? His site on ASSTR has several dozen different author's stories, including some here on SOL, and a few stories he was writing in the back to the caveman genre. Sometime in 2012 he seems to have stopped posting. He doesn't seem to have any other story site or any good lead to what happened to stop the stories he was posting.

no idea what happened with apache. I saw the link for star dancer awhile back and read the story.

On the link Star Dancer was last modified in 2008...

Thank you all for the feedback! I find that Star Dancer is the story I was looking for. And appreciate the link to the story.
