As I recall the story had 2 versions so I may confuse the details.

In both stories, male gathers a largish mixed group of females spanning multiple ages in New York? Both were high tech fiction one with an AI involved and the other with tech superior fabric and weapons. Superhuman body modifications were also involved.

I don't think either story were really good but it has been bugging me.

ETA: Business as Unusual by autofocus is sort of close, but not the 2 I think I am looking for.

Other than being farther in the future than you imply and not taking place in New York, Three Square Meals by Tefler would fit the superior weapons and superhuman body modifications.
