Will there be more in the Smart Girls Universe from Oyster50

johnew1953 ๐Ÿšซ

I have been an avid reader / follower of Oyster50 and his Smart Girls Universe for a few years now. I know he has had a major change in his personal life but apart from one short chapter there has been nothing for the past six months.
When are we going to get more of his excellent writing or will be just be left hanging in the air?

His blog in December says he sent a chapter to editor, and wants to continue. I also look forward to more!

As of April, 2020 he is providing more chapters on a 3 story rotation. Unfortunately, one of them is not a smart girls story.

But it's still an Oyster50 story, and that's good enough for me.

Unfortunately, one of them is not a smart girls story.

For me, that's a big plus. The Smart Girls universe is too big and confusing, and it's lost all pretense of being realistic, having that many 'geniuses' all together.

'Smooth Move' is IMO not his best story - I don't think the cheating aspect is very effective - but the writing quality is, as always, very good and I'm waiting for the next instalment.

Thank you all for your concerns. I appreciate the positive comments and the constructive criticism.

I continue to write. Yes, the Smart Girls universe will continue. I like it myself. I fell in love with the characters early on, and I will keep writing about them. Yes, I know it's complex and convoluted, but people continue to be positive about it for the most part.

My other current story is one I had to write because it has roots in a real incident in my life many years ago. No, real life didn't turn out like the story has. Sorry if it's not your cup of tea.

And after it's finished, there's going to be more, mostly closer to my regular formula.

This virus thing has me at home, but writing pace is slack due to me sharing my life with Sweetie and working five days a week on my real job.

thanks for your patience and support.

Thank you for casting such pearls before this unappreciative swine.

pearls before this unappreciative swine

"Age Before Beauty." "Pearls Before Swine."

Dear Quote Investigator: I think Dorothy Parker should be credited with the wittiest comeback ever spoken. She was attempting to go through a doorway at the same time as another person and words were exchanged. According to the story I heard the other person was the glamorous socialite and playwright Clare Boothe Luce.

"Age before beauty" said Luce while yielding the way. "And pearls before swine," replied Parker while gliding through the doorway. Is this quotation accurate and is this tale true?

Quote Investigator: There is more than one version of this story, and the earliest description does not refer to Clare Boothe Luce by name. However, the second oldest version does identify her and Dorothy Parker as the antagonists. Further, this version was written by the Hollywood columnist Sheilah Graham who claimed that she heard it directly from Parker in 1938.

In 1941 The New Yorker magazine referred to the supposed interchange as an "apocryphal incident". In addition, Boothe has denied the skirmish occurred. QI thinks that there is strong evidence that Parker created the quip, and she spoke it. Yet, it is not completely clear whether she was addressing Boothe.

In this article Clare Boothe Luce will sometimes be referred to as Boothe. Confusion is possible because two names: Clare Boothe and Clare Boothe Luce are both used in media accounts. Clare Boothe married the powerful publisher Henry Luce in 1935, and the name Luce was added to her appellation. Both names have continued in use.

Here are the two earliest citations found by QI. On September 16, 1938 The Spectator, a London periodical, published this passage: 1

It is recorded that Mrs. Parker and a snooty debutante were both going in to supper at a party: the debutante made elaborate way, saying sweetly "Age before beauty, Mrs. Parker." "And pearls before swine," said Mrs. Parker, sweeping in."

Thank you, that was very interesting.

It's fascinating how the meaning of 'pearls before swine' has evolved, unless I got it completely wrong.

Since @oyster50 undoubtedly surpasses me in beauty, does that imply I'm older?

Dunno about 'older'. I'm not older than dirt, but when I got here it was still in the shrinkwrap.

"Shrink wrap"?!? Younger than me than. Butcher and parchment paper. Who pre-dates paper towels? Raise your hand.

I remember when public restrooms had actual cloth towels. They were in a long continuous roll in a wall-mounted dispenser. pull down for a fresh section of towel. The used towels were rolled up in the bottom.

I've seen the cloth rolls still in use as late as last year.

Who pre-dates paper towels?

"In 1907, the Scott Paper Company of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, introduced paper tissues to help prevent the spread of colds from cloth towels in restrooms. Popular belief is that this was partly accidental and was the solution to a railroad car full of long paper rolls meant for toilet paper that were unsuitable to cut into such. In 1919, William E. Corbin, Henry Chase, and Harold Titus began experimenting with paper towels in the Research and Development building of the Brown Company in Berlin, New Hampshire. By 1922, Corbin perfected their product and began mass-producing it at the Cascade Mill on the Berlin/Gorham line. This product was called Nibroc Paper Towels (Corbin spelled backwards). In 1931, the Scott Paper Company of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, introduced their paper towel rolls for kitchens. In 1995, Kimberly-Clark acquired Scott Paper Company."

You have to be 113 years old to pre-date paper towels. Or maybe only 98 years old for Nibroc Paper Towels.

Hmm, that's only true if you live in the USA.
There is a time lag for most other countries. People there were longer unaware of the blessings of paper towels.
