When did you and all your live-in cousins leave the hills? Explains some of the issues in Tennessee if you left there.
I beg your pardon! I was raised by a bunch of Arkansawyers. Never lived in Tennessee! How insulting...marrying cousins - yuck. The only ones that do that are guys who have no sisters!
My, my.
You poor Americans, you must travel half a continent to see something different.
In my hellhole - from ocean coast to top hills (higher than a mile) to great plains is just 200 miles, and we even have people who are traveling this distance on bikes (not motorbikes!), or even horses :D
Oh, it's not quite that bad. There's a great deal of diversity without having to travel too far. Two hours West and I'm in the prairies. Two hours East/Southeast and I'm in the middle of the Ozark mountains. A day's drive West and I'm in the Rockies. A day's drive SW and I'm in the desert. The only thing - if I want ocean, the nearest one is about 1,000 miles away, and it's technically only a gulf. There's no need to drive North. Nothing up there but Nebraska & the Dakotas - which really defines nothing... :P

Dakota Fanning, Dakota Blue Richards and Dakota Johnson?

Dakota Fanning, Dakota Blue Richards and Dakota Johnson?
How about Da coata on the hanger for when yous go out?
About I don't even want to go into the concept of anything being up the Dakotas, or not.
(sarcasm/ humour alert may now be turned off)
Nebraska and South Dakota I'll go along with. North Dakota has got the Badlands, which is some very beautiful country from what I've heard.
Of course, as an Iowa farm boy, I shouldn't be pointing fingers, or throwing rocks at other people's glass houses.
The Badlands National Park is in South Dakota. I have visited there, and it is beautiful, but it is also intimidating.

Yes, but Teddy Roosevelt National Park in North Dakota is also part of what was called the "badlands"
Been there, took many pictures, it was awesome.

Where my brother was stationed you could tan on the beach and swim in the sea and an hour later you could ski in the mountains. He didn't go there but I understand the same goes for Cyprus.

Your brother was stationed in L.A.?
Sorry, but Cyprus does not hold it - too small, too hilly, too much island...
And Palestine (or Israel + Lebanon) neither - there is no true grassland in sight (just desert ...)

Actually, Lebanon fits the bill, not Israel. In March of warm years or April in normal years, the beach in Lebanon is warm enough to swim and sun-bathe, and yet the mountain, almost 2 miles high and reaches almost to the beach, would still be snow covered and the skiing resorts are still in operation.
A drive from Beirut to a ski resort is roughly one hour. So you could swim in the Mediterranean then drive one hour to ski. You can also drive down the other side of the mountain to reach the green valley (narrow by north american standards at about 20 KM wide) but it's green, and flat and full of greenery at that time of year.
I don't know of any other place on earth where that is possible.
Sorry, but this in Lebanon is just a "little" valley - if you are thinking about Bequaa or Bekaa or Becaa valley (it is interesting how you english speaking people could not even name of ancient valley spell with one name), and it is also not so green.
I'm speaking about plains, wide plains with big rivers. OK -not so big like Mississippi (hope I spelled it OK, always missing some s or p :D ) but big enough for big river ships :)
And not knowing enough about your neighbors is making you weak - and that is exactly what I'm reading in your newspapers or on the web portals, and seeing in your TV news channels, reading in stories .
PS:
Around Black Sea or on the north side of Mediterranean you my find at least seven or even more states like this...
Near me there is one small state. It' so small that story bellow may be true :)
*********************************
When on ruck driver was driving thru this state, police stopped him and asked for drivers license.
He was holding breath and did not answered.
Policeman again asked him for drivers license, he does not answering but holding breath, and this goes for around two minutes, making policeman angry.
Finally he takes a breath, and answered policeman "I was hoping to pass your state in one breath again"

When you have such diversity near you, you are maybe going to understand more about how world goes around, and why we all are every day more terrified about you Americans and your way - like elephant in the glass store.
Every day glass store is shrinking and your elephant is growing, and we all know what is going to happen at the end :(
