Life is good

Jim S ๐Ÿšซ

Three authors that I consider as having produced among the top 10 best stories posted on SOL have current stories going: Jay Cantrell, Argon and Al Steiner. Each of the stories are near the top in quality for each of them. Now today I find that another author having a story in the top 10, Lazlo Zalazec, has started one.

So now there are four going. Life is good.

I agree. And The Outsider is carrying on with his story as well. Now all we need is a new saga from rlfj, and maybe another chapter or two to Lady In Red 3. I have pretty much come to the conclusion that Cold Creek wrote himself into a corner he can't get out of, so I have few hopes there. Svengali's Ghost seems to have run into a wall as well. Time will tell.

Two other favorite authors are working on new stories, so we have that to look forward to later this year.

As the White Sox fans say, "Hope Springs Eternal!"

As White Sox fans say: Damn! The Indians are still fuckin' awesome! Come on, 2022!

P.S.: Thanks to the OP for the kind words.

His name is Richard, the ideal name for a man. Rich and hard.

It's also a portmanteau word for 'ripe pilchard'.

Oddly enough, the dictionary next to my desk doesn't list 'ripe' as meaning 'smelly'. Yet more proof that dictionary compilers are far from perfect :(

Ripe typically doesn't smell, or if it does, it's not strong or unpleasant. You're confusing 'ripe' with 'overripe' and 'spoiling'.

"typically" yes but what about a nice bit of Stilton or Gorgonzola?

JohnBobMead ๐Ÿšซ

@Vincent Berg

I'm another one who is very familier with "ripe" referring to something smelling pretty nasty, as in the example given by PrincelyGuy, "Smells pretty ripe around here!".

No question but that it derives from "overripe", but it is a known usage, not a confusion with.

PrincelyGuy ๐Ÿšซ

Maybe it is my upbringing, but I seem to recall hearing people walking by a restroom or other smelly area and commenting "Smells pretty ripe around here!"

I've also heard the malodorous odors emanating from a outdoor latrine being described as "ripe". "Overripe" was reserved for upchuckingly (if thats a word) bad smells where I'm from. Maybe its a regional thing.

Basically I think it depends on how the word is used. Many words seem to depend on their usage for the meanings to be applied. Not all but enough that in some cases you have to read the entire sentence/paragraph to determine the real meaning.

@PrincelyGuy

It's also commonly used in gym changing rooms when occupants have finished their hot, sweaty exercise but not yet showered.

I can attest that in German 'ripe/reif' is used as a reserved description of fetid odors as well.

As in "Mittlere Reife".
