Any unfinished story 'cries out' to be finished, but by the original author, not by a random editor. As anyone who's picked up another author's story can tell you, it's difficult matching author styles, choices keeping the story on the same track. Essentially, the story has to be one a given author is likely to write themselves in a similar manner. It can be done, but it's harder than simply writing your own version of the story. It's also essential you can communicate with the original author and get their acceptance of the changes, so you don't go off track. (Though getting acceptance from the author's family, if they've passed on, works too. Unfortunately, few families know how to access SOL accounts or answer author's emails.)

I kind of doubt that more than a handful of authors have families that even know that SOL exists or the kinds or stories that the author posts here.
We have at least one author who has assumed the responsibility for editing and finishing another author's stories. Despite doing a superior job, he gets criticism for the different style and point of view. It looks like either a labor of love or one of the labors of Hercules. You need to be really strong to take it on, successfully.

We talked when I was considering co-authoring a book with another author. After outlining what was involved, I decided I wasn't willing to give up that much creative control, nor wreck our friendship. Collaboration ain't for sissies!

Also, there's a big difference between collaboration and a straight take over of a part done existing work. How much effort is involved will vary with the differences in style between the two people involved.
