Does anyone know what happened to DaRat, the author of privateer? His last blog update is from 2014-07-31, where he says he is about halfway done with his next story. There is also no email link on his author page. I really enjoyed his story and hope for a sequel.

I sent the author a complimentary email message after I first read Privateer, soon after it was posted. I never received a reply, and later the email link was deleted.

That means the author is still alive (since he took the link down), but doesn't wish to be annoyed by anxious readers. However, if he hasn't written since '14, I'm guessing he's either giving up writing, or at least abandoned the 'Privateer' pseudonym.
The title of the story was Privateer. The name the author used was "DaRat". The writer could have changed pen names or just decided to quit posting stories altogether. Until someone actually has communication with the writer, I will just leave it as "Unknown". There are too many potential reasons to judge without some basis in fact.
