I enjoy a particular, inactive, author's stories. How would I be able to use the search engine to find similar writing styles as well as content?

Use the story codes for content.
Nothing I know of for style (although he may have favorite authors listed).
If you were to name the author here, there's a good chance the good folks here would be able to make suggestions. And by naming the author, you might tempt others here to sample their delights. Win-win!

The site offers that service in it's "Similar Stories" listing. However, that's keyed completely off of story tags as well, though it will often do a decent job.
It really depends on how "mainstream" the tags are as well. For example there is this one author I really like called submissiveromantic that uses "femdom" as a tag very often. You can imagine the amount of variety that tag includes, then the similar stories tool won't do much good.
I usually search descriptions, ask for help on forums or simply use the handy search text on google: "search description" site:storiesonline.net
