I am rereading the Florida Friends stories by DualWriter. In most of the stories featuring Chuck Johnson there are scenes where he and the friends he is playing music with just do some free-form jamming. Tonight while I am reading I have some music playing from my collection. One of the songs on this playlist was 'Light my Fire' by the Doors. Towards the end is a perfect example of this type of jamming.
I never got into the Doors because he liked to scream a lot which I don't enjoy. Just like Hendrik thought feedback was music.
The only live music I tend to enjoy is classical. I very much dislike jam music of all forms.
I don't really get off on jam sessions either. But track down the documentary "It Might Get Loud" and listen to the section where the three of them sit there and Jam on each other's songs. And make sure you do it on a really good sound system. You'll love it.
The 'best' jam-session I remember was at a summer music festival. It toured the country over the course of about a month. two of the 'adjacent dates' were separated by a 12 plus hour drive with a significant flood in the middle so much of the 'fodder' acts gear couldn't make it within the 1 day time frame between the two 'shows'.
It was on a 'main' stage in the middle of the day and one of the acts, really one main guy with long term 'session' musicians in tow had no kit. So the lead guy beg/borrow/stole a semi-acoustic, what he is known for playing and riffed in situ for the whole hour he was scheduled for. the whole crowd ate it up. very impressive performance seeing he didn't play anything remotely recognisable as anything he was known for playing/recording. it was completely off the hook and cuff. very well done.
