Forum: Story Discussion and Feedback

Readers only forum

Amosbayou ๐Ÿšซ

Not exactly sure where I want to go with this. But it seems I should be able to make a friendly comment about a story without being subjected to the "Attack of the Writer Tomatoes."
All I ever see in the story forums are the same dozen or so writers that dominate every thread. So I'm not even sure there is an audience.
Since writers all have those big green markers and readers don't it would seem a simple thing to try out.
How about it, Lazeez? Think it might generate some more contact, more interest?
It might even give some more neutral criticism to these prickly writers who badly need it. But that's just my opinion.
Sounds like a can't lose proposition to me. You demonstrate that the readers are also a part of the site. An important part since we pay the dues. I understand that writers get automatic premier membership while we readers have to pony up bucks for that.
Our own forum seems like a very small thing to me.

There is a problem with your suggestion that you seem to have overlooked.

ALL writers are readers.

I decided to take the easy way out D. I just placed him and his posts on my ignore list. I don't enjoy them and there is no chance of me learning a darn thing.

But how does that ignore work? DS has been begging me to use it since yesterday.

AH, I suppose it was the "last post" comment eh? Like waving a red flag at a bull. Sorry bout that.
SO you guys just hang out on these forums looking to waylay any unsuspecting contributors. With your highlighter. Crumbly started that but he was more judicious in its use, using it as a pointer more or less.
Interesting how something innocuous can be corrupted. Now it is used to isolate and attack phrases, out of context destroying the overall meaning of the message. Done with zeal and total viciousness by those with literary gifts. Unfair to say the least.

Once again, you are not open to facts. I simply pointed out that all writers are readers, therefore would have access to a readers only forum.

Please point out what parts of my remark was condescending, overbearing, or snotty.

As a post in an open forum, it is my right to respond to posts. If you wanted it to be private, there is an option at the top of the main page to contact the webmaster.

This section of the forum that you posted in is supposed to be a readers hangout. You can make friendly and critical comments about stories. That's the whole point of this section. It's titled 'Story discussion and feedback'. So you are supposed to come here to do just that. Discuss stories, give your opinion and let the authors know what you thought of their works.

But it wouldn't fair to make a section that discriminates against authors and gags them, especially when their own stories might be discussed.

What happens when a reader makes some totally false remark about a story or totally missed the whole point of the story or missed a fine point of a story? The author of the story can't reply?

From experience, every story site forum will be dominated by authors. That's the natural order of things. The biggest reason for this 'natural order' is that authors tend to like writing, even writing forum posts. Also, authors are way more invested in the whole things than readers. Most readers want to do just that, read. If they had a bigger inclination to participate and write forum posts, then most likely they'll try their hand at writing stories too.

Don't let anybody intimidate you. See that 'thumb down' icon attached to each and every comment? If you receive genuine abuse, you're supposed to use it to report the abuser. Any repeat offenders will be blocked from posting on the forum.

No, he shouldn't let anyone intimidate him. He should however be open to being corrected when he is flat out wrong.

Here's a summary of that other thread.

Write a long post with back of the napkin calculations claiming something he saw in a story was completely impossible and unrealistic.

Comments with cites explaining that what he claimed was unrealistic was not only very realistic, but was done on a regular basis in the 19th century.

Claim (without evidence to back it up) direct personal experience with the issue at hand and that said experience trumps anything on the internet.

More evidence that he doesn't know what he's talking about is presented.

Claim that his whole point is about 1/10th of his original post and that he has no idea why other people brought up all this other stuff that ties back directly to his original post.

Others point that the other stuff ties back directly to his original post.

Claim the whole thing was just a joke and authors are humorless.

Ok,it was worth a try.

@Amosbayou

Please allow me to correct a couple of misconceptions.
(1) Authors do not get 'automatic' premier membership. They have to earn it. It takes a considerable amount of time and effort to meet the requirements. In fact if their time and effort were calculated at US minimum wage it would show that they actually pay more for premier membership than they would by purchasing it.
(2) Premier membership is like first class on an airplane. You don't have to pay for it if you don't want it. You still get to ride the plane but you don't get the champaign.

End of rant. I feel better now.

Hey thanks! I wondered how that works. Although it is still mostly unclear. And here I thought this post would end with with the webmaster's answer. Silly me.

I understand that writers get automatic premier membership while we readers have to pony up bucks for that.

Here's a little bit of information about the Author Premium Membership from my author statistics page:

Note 4: This number is the size of text qualifying for premier service. If it is over 500, then you should be getting premier service on the site, or you will after your next post. It's calculated from the regular size and the score. Better quality stories are worth more. Stories with multiple authors are divided among all the authors.

The figure in Note 4 is well below the actual story size count. It takes a lot of text and downloads with good scores to get to the 500 mark. Not all authors have earned the Premium Membership, and some authors have also paid for a Premium Membership, anyway.

BTW: A few of the people who had issues with the statements made in the other thread are readers and not authors, so it wasn't only authors who got upset with some of the comments made.
