Sometimes I get an idea for a story but as I write it, it goes in a totally different direction than i thought it would. does anyone else get that ?

Yes! So Often!
I usually have an outline of the major plot points. I often give each chapter a name to use as guide. Months later many of the chapters are quite different! The outline is not much changed, but how my story gets there is!
A couple of nights ago, just before dawn I had an extremely Vivid Dream.
I saw a monastery that had been closed up for a couple of decades. Clear cutting of nearby woods suddenly revealed to people living nearby the neglected buildings and overgrown grounds; only partially visible beyond the monastery wall, and a fringe of the remaining forest.
I quickly woke up my computer and wrote as many details as I could.
I can still visualize "walking down the trail and glimpsing the monastery"
Realistic as the dream seemed, there is no context. So, I have been creating a completely original "back story" that will eventually become something I will begin posting after I complete Aztlan Portal. The story will have a much different focus. The Monastery mostly is a secondary part of the main story. At least as I am outlining it now.
100%.
Sometimes I have these ideas for great little short stories based around a simple scene vignette, but then I start to flesh it out and soon it's turned into something else entirely and the original idea is just a passing scene.
All the time.
It's good, because it means it's more complex, more 'alive' than my first conception.

Any more, I think something's wrong if it doesn't. :)

You mean you start writing 'North by Northwest' and end up with 'Due South'? ;-)

Oh good heavens yes!
Most notably in my "Country Boy" series. Where a few chapters in I realized I had essentially hooked up a rather simple country boy and had him fall in love with a girl who was essentially a slut. And realized that it would never last between them, so part way through the second story I had her finally hit the road. Most of the rest was about him finding the "right girl", who had been there since the beginning.
Of course, that was not structured real well at the start, as it really was intended to be just a single chapter. And as I kept writing, I realized more and more that things between them just would never last. And to eliminate any reader thinking they might get back together, had their relationship end in a way that they were never getting back together again.
