In the story I'm writing, the protagonist stumbles across a list of items with associated costs appearing in a column on the right, appearing much like a standard table of contents - items on one side, costs on the other. Is it possible to create a table using markup, or even html for that matter?
I would like to include it in the next chapter, but looks like I may have to scrap it and incorporate it in the narrative somehow.
I don't know about tables, but it is possible to have images in a story. I don't know exactly how to set it up, but there are a couple of illustrated stories on SOL. If you create your table then convert it to a bit map somehow, that could be embedded in the story.
Probably the closest you'll get to that using the SOL Wizard is to put it in a blockquote. You will have to manually address the columns, but at least it will be indented on both sides.

It's possible to do it in html, but that's not really what we're discussing, is it? Since SOL only accepts a minimal amount of SOL commands, and converts them into it's own markup language, you're essentially asking whether SOL supports tables, and the answer is no.
As DS suggests, you can insert images, but again, SOL isn't really equipped to handle images due to the site's bandwidth limitations, and Lazeez's lack of funds to build up his bandwidth connections. Thus images should be used sparingly. If you only have a single table, that's one thing, though I believe the image has to be at the beginning of the chapter, rather than floating at a fixed point in the text. That essentially defeats your purpose.
Your best bet is to go old school and assume fixed letter widths and count out the distances to create your own tables using ASCII unicode characters. Of course, SOL doesn't use a uniform width for characters, but it'll still preserve the information in a readable format.
I think I've discovered a work-around using SOL's tags, but I have a new question now. The workaround I'm envisioning requires nested lists. Is this possible as an alternative to a table? I only ask because of the way tags are explained in the formatting guidelines. To make a numbered list you have to write $n$ ($'s are squigglies) at the beginning of each numbered item, but because they're used only at the beginning instead of tags wrapping around the text, I can't figure out how to have a list inside a list. Does SOL support nested lists through html via $ul$ or $li$ tags?
I hate to be picky but when my text looks bad, it drives me up the wall, especially when I've spent so much time writing it.
