Illustration at the start of the story.

How do you post an illustration at the start of a story. I found some stories that have a picture or illustration on the story main page

Ernest,

Thank you for this. I added a little to my story - with the intent of just adding flourish.

However, I did have a follow up question(s).

Let's say that I want to now submit a REVISION to that chapter.

Do I need to include the image again, and the guidelines where to center it?

In this case, what happened is Lajeez accidentally left my image instruction tag in the text and placed the image higher above. I am cool with that but I've been getting well-intentioned notes from people saying they are missing an image. I'd like to remove the tag but I don't want to screw anything up by resubmitting and losing the only image I added to the chapter in the first place.

I don't want to create work/trouble - so I've just left it as is for now.

Let's say that I want to now submit a REVISION to that chapter.

When you submit a revised file it replaces the previous file, so you do need to have the image code in the file where you want it to be.

I submit my stories in simple html code now and the code I use for the image placement is as below. However, one thing I do with a replacement chapter file which already has the image in it on SoL is to go to the story on SoL and use the 'view source code' option of my browser to look at the source code Lazeez has used and copy that code into the replacement story file where I want the image to display.

I do know that the image on SoL is placed where I place it in the file I submit.

Original story code for an image is (with spaces added to make the code not work):

< p class="center" > < /p >

Repost story code for an image is (with spaces added to make the code not work):

< p class="c" >< img src="https://res.wlpc.com/img/ernestbywater/secession/01-03-secession-nominated.jpg" width="700" height="487" alt="Please Wait while image loads" >< /p >

This code is from a story with 6 images in it and every one of them appeared in the SoL story in the same place in the text as I set them to appear. Please note the SoL code changes the image appearance size to suit the SoL system as well as the image name and storage location. Those changes are needed due to where they are on the server etc.

One thing to be aware of is that illustrations will not show up in EPub downloads. Obviously they will not appear in text downloads. I don't know about Kindle but I suspect not.

I'm not sure if there's a way to put a tag in the code so that in epub the reader gets a notification that there is a missing image. Even better so the tag describes the image content.

With images, ideally the image adds something to the story. In the best case it is critical to the story.

I have been told that filtered html is the best way to submit stories with image content.

Speaking of html, is there a way to get blockquotes? I have a few stories that would be much more readable if sections could be offset.

(I know there is code to do this, but will it work properly in SOL?)

None of the downloads includes images. I always download the html zip and my conversion procedure has to download covers/images separately because they are not included in the zip.

That's because image within ePubs are handled as Ernest described (just before your post), while the SOL pre-loaded images are not displayed in ePubs, since they are not properly formatted.

Thus, if you edit the ePub (using "edit book" using Calibre) you should be able to convert the dead SOL image instructions to the valid html codes (i.e. < p class=center>< img src="..." alt="...">< /p>.

Also note that the image source refers to the source file, as the document searches within itself for the image and NOT across the internet for it.

What I have done is forgo the tags, upload a single picture with each chapter which appears at the top. That seems simplest and while it doesn't allow for the picture to be placed in the part that is most relevant it still accomplishes my goal of providing a little enhancement to the story. I want the words to be the focus anyway.

My main concern was ensuring the least amount of work to trouble the Webmaster - who does so much work already I don't want to burden them with details. If I have to re-upload I'll try it without the picture included a second time and if it doesn't appear I can live with it. It's just supposed to be a nice extra detail - not a focus.

thanks everyone for their advice though!!!

Don't worry too much about the much work. As long as the post is according to the instructions, then it's fine.

One thing I do to make sure the moderators know what's happening is I include 'Moderator Notes' which state there's an image in the story and the code states where I want it to be. So far they've done a good job of getting it right, even when there are multiple images in the same chapter.
