How Long to wait for Editors to respond about stories

oldegrump ๐Ÿšซ

I lost my original Editor. His last message said RL interfered. Since then two more have volunteered. The first replacement was sent two stories. Six weeks no response. Four messages and querys no response.

New replacement I sent a 6 k flash and waited two weeks no response and 1 query no response

I am going to ask for a new editor, but I do not known what is a reasonable time frame.

I have 8 stories to post and it is bugging me

depending on their real life activity and where my story is in their editorial queue I usually get a story back within a few weeks or an email saying what the delay is.

I've sent the link to this thread to my editors to see if they're interested, so they may make comment or contact you, or they may not.

It sometimes depends on the raw material.

I am an editor. I do not write, nor do I rewrite an author's story.

My intent is to refine the raw manuscript, and make a story easy for the reader to enjoy.

If you have a decent raw manuscript, a 'turnaround' of a week for your 6K flash would be reasonable.

I am similar to TeNderLoin, I am more a proof reader, and sometimes offer alternative words. However, I can become a sqiggy on the over the top type sex stories but am willing to have a look for you. My turn around, depending on size is sometimes same day or upto about a week - obviously dependent on other factors.

@therev

Thank you, Gary. You are also a premier editor/proofer, and I respect your opinion.

That's pretty much my turnaround time for proofreading too (although I don't do same day because I only usually access my e-mail once a day).

Editing takes longer. If the story is in good condition when I receive it, not too much longer. But if it's in need of much tender, loving care, it takes me a lot longer time. A fellow editor says it takes her approximately the same amount of time to edit a story properly as the author took to write their first draft. I reckon I average about half that, but perhaps I don't do a proper job ...

Thank you for your quick responses. I asked one of the editor in the que to help.

My first editor, or more a proof reader had a 5 to 10 day turnaround, and did multiple stories at once. I miss him/her. RL can be a bitch sometimes.

I am a little angry and disturbed when two people who sought me out to edit my stories will not respond to my queries.

@oldegrump

I AM CONFUSED.

As far as I can tell:
* About a week ago you posted a request a new editor for some new stories
* I selected a short story you had posted recently and did a proofread of that
* About a day after your request I sent you an SOL message telling you what I had. I said you needed to advise me of an email address so I could send my edit to you as an attachment
* You have never responded to that message

Courtesy works both ways. I am pissed at you for not at least telling me you did not want my work.

From my current perspective, it looks like you only want someone to look at your new stories; you're unwilling to make any effort to improve an old story.

That is not a good look! I don't waste my skills on anyone who's not willing to make extra efforts to improve existing stories when they can.

Ross

I am sorry if I did not respond.

As to old stores, all of them have been revised at least 3 times, and most 5 times. every revision was basically proofreading. If there are still mistakes in them I can't find them.

I am more interested at this point in my new stories, that is true.

I reread the post in my editor response, and sent you my email. I am interested in your edit.

Again my apologizes, I missed a sentence in your email

Okay. Yes, I think you should have. Now I will forget it and move on. :-)

If there are still mistakes in them I can't find them.

Having seen your pen name from time to time, I assumed you'd know I am not like most proofreaders here. I don't just look for mistakes that need fixing; I look for many different ways in which language can be made more clear, succinct, smooth-flowing, or effective. I marked many things for your consideration, but it was so long ago (He! He!) I don't recall if there were many, or any, I'd classify as "mistakes".

I'll send it off now.

(He! He!)

Were you excited about his protagonist? Humor is usually marked with "Hee, hee!", which denotes laughter, rather than the male pronoun. But look who I'm telling. 'D

Thank you. I won't make that mistake again nor let it pass from anyone else without correction. Haa! Haa! :-)

What is your actual pen name.

I did not find an 'oldegrump' but I did find an 'oldgrump' in the author's listing.

Alas, that's why most of us are older grumps! For a few of us, our memories are often 'Crumbly' too. 'D

OK. Thank you for the response.

Typically, is an editor takes that long to respond, they've got an issue with the story itself, and simply don't know how to politely beg off.

That's why, when I first send a new editor my latest story to review, I include a description and story codes, so they can instantly tell whether the story interests them, or whether it contains any squicks which my cause them to bail mid-way though (that's also my several of my constantly shifting list of editors avoid several series, as they cut a little too close to home).

Personally, if you haven't heard from an editor within two weeks, I'd move on. If they do respond after that, you haven't lost anything, but it's a general warning that, for whatever reasons, they're unlikely to provide timely turn-arounds.
