IHOP

Switch Blayde ๐Ÿšซ

Ernest, now that you know that IHOP is a restaurant referred to in American stories, I have some bad news for you. They changed their name to IHOb.

The "b" evidently stands for burgers. The "P" used to be for pancakes.

I thought the "b" was for breakfast?

robberhands ๐Ÿšซ

Does that mean you can't get pancakes in IHObs anymore? Damn, that's crรชpe.

Why don't the Germans play cricket?

Because they've got rubberhands ;)

Why do the English play cricket?

Because they love being humiliated by Scotland, Ireland, the Dog and Duck 2nd XI ;)

Why do the English play cricket?

A recent UK TV interview was conducted in front of the usual "wallpaper" of sponsor logo's etc, which were in-dispersed with the slogan "There are no boundaries in cricket". Which I presume means that none of the English batsmen can actually hit the ball that far...??

Because there's a tea break.
If it were a beer break, Americans would play.

Not if it were a literal tea break, Americans would enjoy watching those little cups shatter, opening up room for beer stalls.

have they said what the "b" stands for yet? I figured since they didn't say what it stood for they were doing the "change" as a propaganda/marketing ploy....and they wouldn't actually end up changing anything. Lotsa free advertising in the news/media....

Not according to the article in Business Insider, but there's a poster at the cash register with the new name and under the name is "Burgers Burgers Burgers." You can see it here: http://www.businessinsider.com/ihop-ihob-means-burgers-photo-2018-6

Supposedly, several employees who frequently one site 'spilled the beans' about the whole IHOb buildup.

Might as well be, their pancakes always gave me gas. No clue how they managed that.

richardshagrin ๐Ÿšซ

The b could be for bacon, they can put it on both pancakes and burgers, and on beans if they want to. For a Mexican touch, they could offer burritos...

Or maybe Honey, which comes from many more than one b. I didn't want to type bs, that is another possible initial for the mysterious b, the international house of bull shit.

Several years ago, there was a church who got sued by this chain. They called themselves "international house of prayer" then tried to go by IHOP too. I'm guessing they still don't have clearance, because companies still hold onto old aliases after they're done using them. After Federal Express changed their name to FedEx, that didn't give everyone license to grab the old name.

FedEx

When they merge with United Parcel (U. P.) the combination can become Fed Up.

IHOB stands for international House Of Bitches...

Wheezer ๐Ÿšซ

I have one burning question in my mind that I've been trying to ignore. I can't help it, but I must ask - If IHOP becomes IHOB, where will all the one-legged waitresses be able to work?

Switch Blayde ๐Ÿšซ

It's a lowercase "b", but I wonder if it would be trademark infringement if they made the "i" lowercase, as in:

iHOP or iHOb

I wonder if Apple owns that trademark.

awnlee jawking ๐Ÿšซ

@Switch Blayde

It's a lowercase "b"

In that case much of the UK media has been reporting it wrongly, which doesn't surprise me :(

StarFleet Carl ๐Ÿšซ

@Switch Blayde

It's a lowercase "b"

The problem is that since the 'b' makes the 'o' look like it's lower case in their new signage - IHob - now it looks like they're advertising tampons. (o.b. is a tampon brand name, for those who don't know.)

Dominions Son ๐Ÿšซ

I have seen speculation that the whole IHOb thing is an attempt to replicate what happened with New Coke, which was a short term fiasco for Coke because few liked New Coke, but ended up being a positive for Coke in the long term because they re-released "classic" Coke and the publicity around the New Coke fiasco got them a lot of press.

If this is the case, look for IHOP to cancel the name change at the last minute due to public outcry.

@Dominions Son

As I recall it, the Coca-Cola Company did taste tests and asked drinkers whether they thought they should introduce the new drink. The response was an enthusiastic "yes." What they hadn't asked those in the taste tests was whether New Coke should actually replace Classic Coke, and the answer to that question, apparently, would have been an overwhelming "No."

Replies:   Dominions Son
Dominions Son ๐Ÿšซ

@PotomacBob

Those taste tests could have had problems with selection bias. New Coke had it's adherents right up to the point Coke discontinued it, there just weren't enough of them to make it worth Coke's efforts.

I seriously doubt the name change to IHOb was ever official in any legal sense. In which case, they can't officially change it back, because they never officially changed it in the first place.

It wasn't. From the article:

"We'd never turn our back on pancakes (except for that time we faked it to promote our new burgers)," the chain posted on Facebook.
