Big Brother Google

awnlee jawking ๐Ÿšซ

Sorry if this has already been discussed, but is there any easy way to force Google to return results applicable to a country other than the one you're currently in? I've just discovered that in November Google removed the 'go to Google.com' link at the bottom of the page.

Being able to choose the version of Google you want to use was a useful tool for authors doing research.

https://www.google.com/advanced_search

the advance search button allows you to search for hits within the country specified. However, I suspect your problem is that the default google setting now is to have you use the local google server, so if you're in Australia you get the google.com.au server, if in Google UK you get the google.co.uk server.

one way around that is to use the code:

www.google.com/ncr

the ncr is supposed it indicate a command of no country redirect - not sure how well it works but the search page I get is google.com and not google.com.au

another is to use a VPN service like Tunnel Bear

www.tunnelbear.com

to point it at another country. Since the browser now surfaces in another country it does the search as if from that country. So when I use google search while using tunnel bear to surface in Canada I get google.com.can not google.com.au as the search page.

TunnelBear was just acquired by McAfee. To me, that doesn't sound like a good thing, so I'll be switching to VuprVPN this week:

news to me, but the concept of using a VPN is what's important there.

OR use VPN & Duckduckgo.

click on settings at bottom of google page, then search settings, then region settings and you can select a different region, then click on save. This has worked for me.

@awnlee jawking

In Google's Advanced Search, wouldn't "region" do that?

awnlee jawking ๐Ÿšซ

I believe Google has closed the www.google.com/ncr work-around. You still get google.com but it knows and acts on your location.

I'll try experimenting with region.

I'll use a VPN as a last resort. Please let us know how VuprVPN performs.

And don't forget to open a private browser window so previous history isn't used.

https://duckduckgo.com/ is a search-engine which claims it does not track you, but I just tried a couple of https://duckduckgo.country-extension/ values and got nowhere so it presumably won't help with the original problem here.

Oh, and I think it is part-owned by Yandex - the Russian Google. Enjoy.
