I post cover art at 600 x 900 pixels at 600 ppi now.
Lazeez increased the acceptable size of images a short time ago. It used to be limited to 72 dpi images, but now allows full 300 dpi 'hi-res' images, though he still doesn't allow 6"x9" images.
The limit used to be 400 pixels for the largest dimension (vertical). Now it's 1053 (? That's what I'm using and I'll stick with it). It's also the same image I use for a hi-res image of the 'next book' at the end of my print books, so it works out nicely.
current recommend is 600 x 900 x 600 dpi - which is why I use it
edit to add, he does accept 900 x 1350 at 600 dpi - if it's too big he'll cut it back, so send what you want. and let him resize.
We don't have specific size limits anymore. But images have to be of practical size. Since we're not posting images to be specifically downloadable, having pictures in gigantic sizes (anything over 2000 px in a dimension) isn't logical as pictures are usually used for display inline in a story.
Now we just optimize for file size and we try to keep things under 200KB.
But, each image is treated on its own. So we make a judgement call. If it's a detailed map, then we don't shrink it enough to lose details. But if it's just an image, we keep it at acceptable dimensions in case readers want to zoom in on some details.
We have tools to make file sizes really small while keeping the quality high, so we use those most of the time without resizing the picture's canvas.

The key is, as always, don't get greedy by pushing for the maximum you can get away with, because we're all sharing this platform. However, SOL is adapting to the market. People with newer devices with high-res displays expect to see more detail, and since SOL upgrades it's servers, it can now deliver it. But when they run out of space, it'll limit each of us.

In our current set up, disk space is the biggest issue for us as a site. Bandwidth not a concern anymore. Currently we're using only 5% (or about 16TB per month) of our allowed outbound transfer.
However, with phones becoming the major way to access the site, bandwidth has become an issue for readers. So to keep the site's performance at peak, large files are discouraged.

Noted. My takeaway, for story postings, a single larger hi-def image is fine (mine are only 2 - 3" in real terms) as the only posting for an entire story, but if you're going to post a picture per chapter, you'd best use low-res images.
Note: we had this discussion earlier, when I suggested including images like I do in ebooks, where they're only stored once for an entire ebook, but can be displayed repeatedly at no additional cost. However, that doesn't fly for websites, only for ebooks.
Long and short with ebooks, graphic chapter heads cost dearly, while repeated images are your best bet to add value. (Note: The same seems to hold true when posting to Amazon, SW, lulu, etc.).
