just kidding lol
Did my name get pulled out of the hat for the Let's pick on him contest today?
Katsar starts the thread, I reply to his post, then jplong replies to katsar's post but marks it as a reply to me, I reply to jplong's post, then robberhands replies to jplong's post but marks it as a reply to me. Is this some weird conspiracy? Neither of my posts get replied to, but everyone else's posts are replied as if they're mine!
You function as an uniting entity to us. Be proud!
Well, that's a lot better than being the target!
Because I hit the arrow on the last post of the thread instead of 'Reply to Topic'
you need to buy a better bow if you get the wrong arrows.

Well apparently I can highlight text anywhere on the page, in order to quote it, and then hit the reply arrow on a post anywhere on the page and it will be directed towards that commenter.

THIS IS A TEST ...
I highlighted words by jplong, then hit Reply to Post on a post by EB. I expect the system to accuse EB of using the words jplong actually wrote.
THE RESULT OF THE TEST
... was it appears EB said words he did not say.
now I'm a marionette.
No. A marionette is a puppet whose arms, legs, and head are controlled by a puppeteer.
You are a dummy. :-)

And all this time I thought they were Marion Barry's backup singers.

The bitch set him up.
backup singers.
are they the groups of people who sing while walking backward?
No, they are the people who sing while doing a computer backup.
HM.
Are you sure that's not a 'dumby'?
Yes, I'm sure.
Let's All Pick on CW Day was a few days ago. Today is Let's All Pick on EB Day.

You'd make a lousy Cupid. About as bad as the current incumbent, in fact! :)

In another universe, I've been discussing the drying up of chalk streams due to overextraction. Perhaps cold creek needs a very wet winter too!

I really dislike the way the system inserts the name of the poster being responded to itself.
It does not allow us to control what we say!
I have suggested Lazeez has a second type of back arrow for Reply to Post, one which does not display the name of the person being quoted.
My reason for suggesting that is I've seen so many disputes break out SIMPLY BECAUSE a post intended to add information to a comment someone has made comes out looking like an accusation they missed or got something wrong.
Lazeez did make a change. He changed the Reply to Thread function so that it would quote any highlighted text when Reply to Thread is selected.
Technically, that is a suitable solution. In practice, it is not making any difference because it's TOO EASY to hit Reply to Post instead of scrolling down to Reply to Thread.
I think this will be my fourth, or fifth, for a change to the system so that it stops CREATING NEEDLESS DISPUTES:
1. When Reply to Post is selected the '@' symbol and the name of the person being responded to is inserted at the top of the text area.
2. When displaying posts it no longer inserts the '@' symbol and whatever name it has recorded as the person whose post was responded to.
At least with that, we will see what our posts will come out looking like and edit them as we see fit.

I vote against.
That would make it difficult for an interested party to follow the conversation back up to the original comment to see its context.

I agree with you AJ. A better fix would be to include the @(name) in the edit box so they can see who they are replying to.

So how about?
1. The link we do not see, but can use later to go back through a thread, was left as it is except it was displayed as '>>' instead of '@'
2. An extra '@' and the poster's name appears as ordinary text at the top of the edit box, before any highlighted words placed inside quotes.
That would allow us to see and control what our post will look like.
What I think is desperately needed here is something that will prompt those writing posts to consider do they really want their comments to come out with an implied finger pointing at someone else. We very often make posts pointed at the person who is, in fact, the only person we know will have no interest in our comments.
wow started as a joke look what happend
well, what do you expect, no one had the proper forms to write their return reason on!
