It seems similar to those who'll occasionally report 'tasting colors' or seeing moods as colorful auras around particular individuals. It's never a constant thing, yet it seems triggered by other factors (an indirect link between different areas of the brain based on each individual's DNA?).

Those sensations have been long reported, yet usually, most scientific researchers either can't get the funding for a particular study or simply have no idea how to approach the problem. Thus it's more akin to a "St. Elmo's Fire" of an individual's sensations. It's not common, yet it's well-known and documented for centuries.
