I've done a search and didn't find anything that addresses my concern. Is it allowed to use AI to create images to use on a book cover? I used an AI webpage to create images of the characters in my latest story and would like to use them on the cover. I know there is a lot of controversy over the use of AI and don't want to run foul of the host. Reading the rules, it just mentions no underage AI content.

AI images are fine. Just follow the image rules (and the recommendations and guidelines for covers).
I would send this as a direct email question to Laz. He is the final authority on what is allowed, here. However I don't think there is a problem.
Yes, you can use AI to generate images for book covers on SOL or elsewhere. The generated images are not copyrighted.
Currently, I'm using Meta AI to do that. The only problem with Meta AI for my images is it censors what I'm asking for most of the time and I have to work around that. I get something like, "Oops, I cannot do that."
It's worth mentioning that there are sometimes terms of service restrictions on image usage, depending on what service/model you use.
I would guess that the big-name free generators like ChatGPT, TwitterX, etc. don't come with any meaningful strings. For the premium paid services I can't guess.
If you're doing self-hosted generation (with InvokeAI or Automatic1111 for instance), you'll definitely want to look over the TOS for the particular model you're using. Some are, "only for non-commercial usage." I believe I saw another one that allowed usage up to a certain annual income for the individual or business entity.
