Sticky Comments, Anyone?

awnlee jawking ๐Ÿšซ

Greetings Fellow Authors.

I thought it might be useful for authors to be able to post a 'sticky' story comment to always appear on top. The author could use it to stipulate 'no politics' or 'no spoilers' or 'no negative criticism' (eg 'get an editor' without supplying justification).

Can't see much reason, or even need, for such a thing.

'no negative criticism'

is a double negative.

In fact, any writer making demands on the reader to do (or not do!) certain things in the comment section, is asking for readers to do exactly that. It's typical human behaviour to do that which you are told not to. Also, would demanding commentators tread a certain line have the negative effect of stopping people from commentating or even (if turned on) deliberately low voting purely because, well, because ...

In the Guides:

The {end-note} {/end-note} tag causes the text to be enclosed in an outlined, pale yellow box. The text comes out in sans-serif (bigger than the 'notice' text).

The only difference between {notice} and {end-note} is the size of the text.

I would suggest using this tool. It should do what you seem to want as effectively as a "Sticy"... without causing Laz to have to code something new.

As Pixy commented, "Some people will do the opposite of what you request. For reasons." (My interpretation.)

I recall a few stories that used the End Note feature in a manner similar to what you are requesting.

In my story Synopsis, I typically request for readers to PM me about spelling errors, or other corrections, rather than using the post story comment section.

My perception is that many readers regard things like Descriptions, Codes, Prefaces, Forewords, End Notes etc as gravy, to be ignored.

Some readers allegedly perceive story comments as mini-reviews, and jump straight to them before deciding whether to read a story.

Some authors don't moderate their story comments, others moderate them strictly (based on their forum admissions).

A sticky comment would count as meat rather than gravy, and set reader expectations as to how to expect comments to be moderated.

I think there's a case, but I'd like to hear from those who actively moderate the comments on their stories.

I believe that 'sticky notes' would be COUNTER-productive. Just what we need to read what twenty or so other people's ideas of the most important things that we HAVE to know before we get to new content.

IMHO Anything like a sticky note should be solely in the provenance of Lazeez.

I'm unaware of any stories that have 'twenty or so' authors.

I envisaged only one 'sticky' comment per story.

My take, was that it's only going to be 'twenty or so' authors on the site, that would use the facility (in their own stories).

That's not me. In fact, I'm normally over the moon to just get a comment! Moderation has never been required, and even if it had been, I would probably have left it up just so other people could read it and have a laugh. Because, let's be honest here, a comment that requires (genuine) moderation most likely has been written by someone with obvious issues.

On the other hand, stories with a high content of moderable comments, probably justify those comments, and the reality check is warranted. I suppose it all boils down to the content of those comments. If it's based on the perceived colour, political views, religion, etc etc of the writer, then fair one, but again, show don't tell, I would be tempted to leave those comments up so everyone else can see what an absolute arse hat the commentor was/is.

But there again, we are all different and some writers are very susceptible to criticism in any shape or form and moderation is a necessity.

If they're not the author of a story, they would be a reader and not have 'sticky' privilege over its comments.

Just like forum topics, comments sections can be hit by outbreaks of thread drifts and name calling.

I recently deleted a comment on one of my stories. The poster had hit enter prematurely then re-entered the comment afresh with the extra that got missed out the first time. I deleted the first version.

I'm obviously in one of my 'blonde' moments, as I fail to see the pertinence of your comment with regards to mine and feel as though we are typing at cross purposes. I know that as a reader, they would not have 'sticky privileges'. My observation, was that only a few authors here would probably use the ability to 'sticky' notes on their comments section and therefore it might be an unproductive use of Laz's time to enable/create the feature. Which is why your reply is failing to provide suitable comprehension on my part.

Admittedly, my own weak ability has yet to create enough fuel for such a state of affairs to arise. Maybe in a decade or so ...

Again, I would have probably have left the (almost) double post as most comment readers would likely understand what had happened. Which is absolutely nothing to do with how the extra comment looks on the tally of the author page ... (ahem).

I did once receive the extremely helpful comment of "Nope." on one of my stories. I did ask the originator to elucidate. :Plot Spoiler: They never did. I can see why some might wish to remove it, if it was on their comments, but for some admittedly weird reason, I am happy for people to voice their opinion and leave them there. If I really don't like the comment, I can just kill them brutally in the story ... or make them have gay sex or something ... Which reminds me, I did once receive a very angry PM from someone who made a comment on one of my stories and I subsequently put them in a story, and they thought I had made them gay !?! (The character only existed long enough to be impaled on a fence or something, but I think a common UK term means something else in America, and that's what they took umbrage to, rather than the fact they were brutally killed ... Some people eh?).

Absolutely. That's why I raised it here rather than as a feature request, to try to ascertain how many other authors would value the option.

In my stories' comments section there was been the odd heated remark but nothing that escalated. Anecdotally, another author found a full-scale political war in one of his story's comments and deleted the lot. I guess I'm too vanilla to generate much controversy.

Except here, of course.

Same.

I replied to an individual on the forums and even as I posted it, I expected to receive a polite rebuke from Laz in response. I didn't and though the response in turn from the individual, really made me wish to reply further, I knew I was on dangerous ground as it was and I left the post unanswered.

Incidentally, I didn't block the individual, though I did do a forum search for their posts to see what their behaviour was in general. Turns out their few previous posts were quite sensible and I haven't seen them since, so ... I shrugged my shoulders and moved on.

Ok. I must confess that I misread something in the original post.

This suggestion was for story comments. Somehow, I thought it was for FORUM comments.

Mea culpa.

How dare you use such language on the forums! I think Laz should give you a three day suspension for the crime of being, and implying, s*nsibility ...

If you're referring to story comments, I believe only the author of the story and management have the power to delete comments.

The reason I deleted the half-complete version of a reader's comment was because I believed it was what they would want since they didn't have the capability to delete it for themselves.

Never thought about that, and now that I have, I'm curious. I'm off to try it out...

Edit: Yip, you are correct. A commentator cannot remove their comment from a story. Every day is a school day...
