Favorite Genres

Vincent Berg ๐Ÿšซ

Since Lazeez is championing the creation of new specialty sites, I'm curious if anyone here has any favorite genre categories they'd like to see develop into a new story site (not promising it'll ever happen though).

For me, most of my stories are 'hard' science-fiction (fiction based on actual science) dealing with larger than life issues (i.e. end of the world type of stuff). However, my true literary love are "Southern Fiction", the pseudo-true life tales of oddball characters living their lives independently of everyone around them (a necessary component for independent types living in the southeast states in the U.S.). I doubt anyone will ever create a website for this sub-genre (since few bookstores other than those in said Southern states even recognize it as a specific genre), but that's the type of story I'd eventually prefer to write, I just haven't felt qualified to write any of them yet.

Any other favorites, say maybe something we could offer to Lazeez?

Prefer hard military sci-fi, but I'm not so good at writing it as I don't have the background.

The vast majority of us authors here on SOL "have no background" in writing. Typically, one day you think "I can write a better story than this", and the next thing you know you've got a dozen stories to your credit and a loyal fan base.

All you need is life experience, a feel for decent literature (so you at least recognize what's needed) a story to tell (and some very good editors).

I'm noticing a real propensity of people leaning toward sports related stories. Maybe not sports centic but sports being a major player (ha, see what I did there) in the whole story.

Well, most coming of age stories do tend to orbit some sort of sporting related activities and also do over stories tend to do the same.

Just an idea.

In the US High School sport seems to be a big business & a huge deal, so it makes sense that they make such useful plot devices.

Sports have lots of opportunities for drama and tension, so they make a good background for a story.

That's been a common theme for a while. With more people involved with sports in their lives, they expect to see it reflected in the stories they read. I continually had people asking for my main character, Alex, in my "Catalyst" series to get on a regular exercise program (since his health was steadily decreasing), but I had trouble working it into the story with his unscheduled frentic activity.

Even now, I have trouble figuring out how to convey daily exercise in a story since there are fewer dialogue opportunities.

I know it is telling, not showing, but why not just say he was starting/finishing his shower after his workout, or maybe someone comments because he DIDN'T get his shower because of his "unscheduled frentic activity."?

Despite their interest in the sex scenes, I don't think they were interested in his after exercise shower scenes as they were in his trying to improve his declining health (i.e. they were worried about him), but the interest is more in seeing how a character deals with issues and structures their lives.

That could all depend on what else happens in the shower :)

I think I understand what you're saying though.

My work-in-progress is not a sports story, but sports plays a role in it. It was a useful tool to develop the plot.

He's a baseball star and college scouts are coming to the next game. Major conflict between his family and the town so he gets thrown off the team before that game.

Moves to a new town where the coach drools over him (the two schools play against each other). He becomes popular because of being on the team, but makes an enemy from the guy he replaced.

About to write the scene where he goes back to play against his old team. He's going to be hit by a pitch on purpose, but makes the other team pay for that.

See what I'm saying. It's not a sports story, but the sports plays a role. There's even stuff about a cheerleader who flirts with him.
