Amazon puts a cap on self-publishing to combat flood of AI-generated novels
https://www.techspot.com/news/100246-amazon-puts-cap-self-publishing-combat-flood-ai.html

There's been a flood of what's suspected to be AI-written novels published on Amazon this year, and as such, the tech giant is limiting the number of books that authors can submit to the site to three per day.

Amazon revealed the publication limitation in a post on the Kindle Direct Publishing (KDP) forum. KDP allows authors to self-publish their books and sell them in e-book, paperback, and hardback versions on the retail site.

"While we have not seen a spike in our publishing numbers, in order to help protect against abuse, we are lowering the volume limits we have in place on new title creations," read the statement.

Amazon told The Guardian that the limit is three titles per day, though this number may be adjusted if needed. The company said that there had previously been no limit on the number of books an author could list in a single day. (Update: Amazon has since confirmed there was a previous limit, but the company declined to say what it was).

That will also impact the thieves. But 3 a day is still too many.

I can think of situations where an ethical writer might want to submit more than three stories in a single day.

The problem would be better addressed if they could stop the AI-generated and the thieves.

Yeah. I imagine there are quite a few writers who have built quite the portfolio writing for themselves for years, before one day realizing that they could just put their stuff up for money.

Just imagine someone like Just Plain Bob doing this. With three stories a day, he'd be uploading them to Amazon for MONTHS before being done.

But I'm still in favor of them doing something about this. I have read quite a few AI-Generated "novels" by now, mostly by people who freely admit to using AI because they are too insecure about their writing abilities. And those books were fucking abysmal! It was NOT fun reading those!

But if roughly 80% of your new submissions each day are made up of lazy crap, it lowers the attractiveness of your catalog as a whole. My motivation to try and hope to get an actual book for my money is basically gone by now.

Same here.
I tried Amazon's Free Samples sent to my Kindle app, but many of those were so long winded that I couldn't decide if they are worth the money to buy the book.

In one case โ€“ a then 5 books series โ€“ I bought the first book and after reading it I foolishly decided to order the remaining four books. A few weeks ago I stopped reading midway in Book 4, because the more details of the world the author revealed the more stressed got my suspending of disbelieve. In the meantime the author published Book 6, but I doubt I will resume reading the series. (Erik Schubach's Elfed in New York).
