Are majorettes athletes?

PotomacBob ๐Ÿšซ

I've met a number of young women who were high school cheerleaders. Every one of them who said anything about it said cheerleaders were athletes and emphasized the training they go through.
What about majorettes? Are they athletes, too? To me, majorettes don't seem as constantly active as cheerleaders. I have no idea what kind of training they might go through.
Are there stories on SOL about majorettes and their skills and training?

They are like conductors, They stand in front of a band in a fancy getup and wave their arms around like someone on meth with a stick. I bet even the band doesn't know that they are doing.

Good musicians in a proper orchestra absolutely know what the conductor is communicating, and everyone from the conductor to the first chairs all the way down to the third string triangle player are part of a well oiled machine that is genuinely fascinating to observe.

Then there's musicians like I was, who played in the band all the way through high school to fulfill a requirement and could play well enough not to embarrass themselves - mostly - but really had little idea what the hell was going on. That sort of musician has no idea what the conductor is trying to communicate beyond it being like a car horn or a dog's barks where literally everything translates to some variation of "Hey!"

Modern athletics originated from a set of disciplines that would have been useful at the Battle of Thermopylae, fighting off the Persian invasion.

I'm sure cheerleading and majoretting would have been very useful skills for the Spartans.

NB The Spartans have just won a playoff against Albion Rovers and next season will play in Scottish Leage Two.

No.
They are dancers and prancers and flag wavers.
Considered part of the band.

No one, not even the parents of the band members, would stay in the stands during halftime to watch a bunch of guys in tacky uniforms march around spelling out letters, if there weren't cute girls at the front, twirling batons.

Army Majors are not very athletic, the female ones who might be called Majorettes are even less athletic.

I don't know if they discuss skills and training, especially skills and training about music, but there are 69 stories on SOL where "majorette" appears.

I can hear the screaming now: majorettes are athletes in the same way that artistic gymnasts and synchronized swimmers are athletes. Majorettes twirl batons, artistic gymnasts twirl ribbons and whatnot, and synchronized swimmers twirl their tushies while standing upside down in the pool. I think all three would be better categorized as twirlers instead of athletes. You can begin screaming now!

Well, they are mildly more athletic than chess players. Aren't they on the list for olympic consideration these days? ;-)

Well, keep in mind that ESPN shows professional poker, complete with announcers and play by play discussion. So, that would tend to make that both a sport and those players athletes, wouldn't it?

Screaming! I trained different age groups of synchronized swimmers. I can assure you they are real athletes. It takes a lot of training and dedication to get to a recreational level that looks good. Very few can make it to a competition level and even fewer to Olympic level. You probably never noticed how much muscles they show out of the water because you were looking at something else ;)

Years ago, early 60's, after high school swimming season was over, some of us on the team played around with some of the synchronized swimming 'moves'. We learned that we didn't have the stamina to do some. Also there are some moves that those of the XX can do that the XY can't and vise versa. Most of us were in the top 20 in our events in the state by time. So yes synchronized swimmers are athletes!

Change that 'some moves' to 'most moves'. It's because of the difference in center of mass between man and woman. A woman's center of mass is almost "in the hips", i.e. a sort of hinge point when bending over. For a man that point is significantly higher which makes most figures and moves in synchronized swimming physically impossible for a man.

So people who can masturbate to orgasm with their non-dominant hand are athletes ;-)

That would make basically all women athletes.

It may have got a lil bit more civil nowadays, but artistic gymnastics is a hellish hard sport. The side you don't see is pure nightmare, especially at high level. Anyhow, those girls sport serious muscle, even if it's sculpted in less obvious a way.

I agree. I already have two balls which have controlled a good portion of my life. I don't need a little white one to control the rest of it.
