So checking out some of the ePubs for my stories on my dad's Kindle reveals a lack of chapter headings in the TOC on that device.
I use Sigil to construct the ePubs and build out a TOC (which shows up on my iPhone's Books app), but understand there are differences in how Kindle does things.
Is there a regex (or whatever) string for Calibre that I should use when I "convert" an ePub to a new ePub? I do make the AZW3 and PDF conversions but can't test those with Kindle or the Kindle app.
I'm surprised you can even use ePub on Kindle at all. The one I have is MOBI and AZW only.
You might want to check Amazon's Kindle site, they probably have specifications for files posted somewhere.

When I use the latest version of Kindle Previewer (needed for KindleGen), it advises to switch to ePub:
"We recommend using EPUB format for publishing new titles and uploading previously published titles. Please use a valid EPUB for publishing"
This is from Amazon's own app designed to create .moobi files.
Thanks for reminding me about Previewer. I haven't used it for a long while, and even deleted it from my computer over a year ago when I was really away from writing.
Just downloaded the software again.
I found their docs on ToC creation and structure. Thanks for steering me in that direction (especially when I should have thought to check).
I should clarify the original post: no ToC appears on the Kindle when you tap the ToC icon on the top menu bar while reading. The icon is up on the top left next to the down carat which will close the reading app.
