Interface Change for Premier members (Tag and Author Exclusions)

Lazeez Jiddan (Webmaster)

Today we changed the interface for overriding the category/tag and author exclusions to listings.

Previously, the Category/Tag exclusions page had a box on top allowing you to toggle where your exclusions apply or overridden. It was confusing and many turned off filtering then asked why it wasn't working.

I removed this override preference and now each page where the exclusions apply will have a on-page override switch.

It changed in:

New stories
Updates,
Alphabetical listings
Random stories page
Rising stars page (in library),
With potential (in library)
Concluded Serials,
Category/tag search page,
Advanced search page.

Premier service on the site allows one to exclude tags and authors from story listings/search results.

The system provided a way to override those exclusion preferences on page per page basis. It was all in one big dialog box.

Many members and authors turned OFF those exclusion preferences in this one big dialog box and forgot they did so and then wondered how come their preferences weren't being respected, and reported that as a bug.

So I removed that big toggle dialog box from the 'Category exclusion preferences' page and put a link that toggles the exclusion preferences directly on each page.

So for example, the new stories page has a link on top titled 'Override Exclusions' right next to the link to the tag definitions. Clicking that 'Override Exclusions' link will tell the system to ignore your exclusion preferences and show you an unfiltered version of the page.

If you don't see that 'Override Exclusions' it usually means that you don't have any tags or authors excluded, so there is no need for the link as it won't do anything.

I may possibly use that in the Alphabetical Listings or the Search pages, but whatever.
An alternative approach would have been something along the lines of

48,215 further stories hidden by your Exclusion settings

except that would probably have to appear after the last page of multi-page output, otherwise you'd presumably have to make two passes through the data and that is absolutely not worth it.

I can go to the Genres Exclusion Preferences, check them all, and click Save Changes.

No difference in what stories show regardless of whether all, or none, are checked.

Same thing applies to the categories in the upper part of that page.

I've cleared cookies, logged out and back in, and the category exclusions just reset to what they were several months ago.

Where? The stream on the home page? That's not filtered.

New stories, updates, anywhere.

The filters that I set up months (or maybe years) ago are working, apparently. e.g. I can show or hide stories that contain "bestiality" - as that was a filter that I've had in place forever.

But they cannot be changed. I can un-check them all, save, log out, log back in, and the check marks are back just like they were before I unchecked them all.

Or I can do the opposite, check them all, save, log out, back in, and the original half-dozen are back, and the rest unchecked.

Either way, the number of Stories Excluded by your Selection doesn't change. Which I would expect go up if I set up filters to filter out nearly everything, or go down if I filter out nothing.

@irvmull

But they cannot be changed.

OK, it was a bug, but that only started yesterday and it's fixed today.

The way you phrased it, you made it sound is like you've been trying to change your preferences for months and it wasn't working since.

It works now.

Have you tested the "Reset" buttons?
They don't work for me.

Lazeez Jiddan (Webmaster)

@irvmull

The reset button doesn't turn off all of them if that's what you're thinking.

It's supposed to reset the form to what it was before you made changes.

So if you go to the preferences page, and you have 10 tags selected, you uncheck 3 of them and then you click the reset button, the three that you unchecked will be checked again.

Possibly name it 'Revert' then?

Possibly name it 'Revert' then?

I believe "reset" is the standard name for that. Or maybe "default settings."

@Switch Blayde

I r-click on a document tab in the editor, and select 'Revert' to revert to the previously saved version, discarding recent changes. Revert is unambiguous here, where 'Reset' has a very different connotation, and would cause confusion as noted previously. It might be a M$ standard and as ubiquitous as dog turds on the streets of Paris, but like that, not necessarily a good thing.

@Lazeez Jiddan (Webmaster)

Oh. OK, it does that.
Maybe "cancel changes" would be clearer?
