I added futanari to the list of tags on the site under the 'story type' section.
There seems to be more and more of them and it's time they get their own tag.

There is already a tag for "Hermaphrodite".
What distinguishes futanari from other stories involving hermaphrodites?

They're basically the same and that's why I didn't add it before, relying on the authors using the Hermaphrodite tag.
However, Futanari (Futa) is now basically a genre of manga and while hermaphrodite occurs in nature and that's why it was needed, Futas have many origins that are not natural and override the whole genetic accident thing.
So I would rather that authors use Hermaphrodite as it was originally intended for those characters that are basically normal human beings that due to genetic or hormonal issues are born with both sets of organs.
And use Futa for manga style stories, (fantasy, magical etc...)

Not a complaint, but I've just been watching a hermaphrodite and it's very not-human ;-)

I have the same thought anytime I see members of Parliament...
Some day biologists will actually recognize career politicians as...
an invasive pest species. FTFY :)

More apposite than you might have expected because my hermaphrodite is a Gastropod and closely related to slugs and snails ;-)

Again, seems to describe politicians everywhere.
Apologies to Gastropods for demeaning their characters by comparison.
I always thought politicians were just like the rest of us, except we marry one person and they marry a million.

Er. You do know that this is exceedingly rare in real life, and that people with intersex conditions have organs with mixed male and female characteristics, yes?

Yes. I know. That's why I make the distinction.

You should make that clearer in the tag definitions.
Aside from Lazeez's comments, it's worth noting that many Futanari characters aren't actually hermaphrodites. It is common for futa to appear female and identify as female but to only have male genitalia, no female genitalia.
So for that kind of futa the term hermaphrodite simply doesn't apply. You could possible use trans and refer to the character as pre-op M>F, but that's not really accurate either.
Awesome! Glad to see this! Hermaphrodites and Futanari are not really the same. While both have a penis and vagina, futanari may or may not also have a scrotum between their cock and vagina (those that do are called a "full-package futa"), whereas hermaphrodites do not. Also, from what I have read, real life human hermaphrodites do not have a fully functional cock that is able to produce sperm or ejaculate, and the cock is usually not larger than an inch or so. A hermaphrodite's cock also takes the place of their clit, whereas that is not always the case for futanari and they can have a clit below their cock (or scrotum, if they have one). As for the mention of futanari with a cock but not a vagina (born that way, not trans), that is technically not a futanari but usually referred to as a "dickgirl" in the manga/doujin community.
