Exceptions to the Constitution

Posted at Updated:

The Constitution is filled with many exceptions despite what we all might believe. For example, we all know Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, except you cannot yell fire in a crowded theatre, or encourage people to riot.

Now it seems that our state governments seem to be jumping even deeper into the exceptions, especially when it is all about the children (right, everyone who believes this, put up your hand). Sadly, as a Virginia resident, yours truly may now be a victim. Feel free to search: Youngkin signs law requiring stringent age verification for porn sites.

I honestly do not know how that will affect us here at SoL, but if I stop posting, you will know that I do not feel like giving some unknown third-party my government ID.

And neither should you, even if you have one that matches your pen name.

(Virginia has a similar statute in its Constitution: That the freedoms of speech and of the press are among the great bulwarks of liberty, and can never be restrained except by despotic governments; that any citizen may freely speak, write, and publish his sentiments on all subjects, being responsible for the abuse of that right; that the General Assembly shall not pass any law abridging the freedom of speech or of the press)

NOTE: Yes, I know "Congress" is now "the Government," and yes, I know a simple VPN would work around the issue. That is not the point. The point is that this is the first shot at the ship of censorship.
