Me, myself and Jacob

It might come as no surprise that I've poured a lot of myself into Jacob. He tries to be a nice guy, because he does care about people. At the same time, he takes advantage of the situation before him. He knows that older women in relationships are most likely to want to get pregnant, and yet he selects mostly teens, many of them virgins. Perhaps the candidates don't seem like real people, with hopes and fears, until they're waiting on the bed for him and their fate is sealed.

The Selective Service universe is in some ways convenient for me as a writer. The breeding program is an institution of male power. I can explore nonconsensual situations and largely blame them on the universe. You might call it a sort of moral magic realism, though even in this universe Jacob is far from perfect.

It's not all bad for the women. I very much enjoyed writing about Abby's session, for example. I hope to write more scenes like that in the future. And Jacob does try to make the best of bad situations for his girls.

In contrast, the darker side of my imagination has also been calling, and I haven't decided whether to listen. I'm thinking of scenes that would require a breeder less kind than Jacob, a selfish young man, perhaps even evil, who would fully exercise his power over the women he breeds. Would readers be interested in that that sort of story?
