I am Soliciting Thoughts on Story Codes

Posted at

In my story a Sixth Generation Cowboy, I am using the Story Codes Military and War, should I be using the Story Code Violence? In the most recent chapter (3) I depicted the aftermath of a Complex Ambush, and elements of a Firefight as the Main Character's Platoon came to the relief of their fellow soldiers.

I aimed to be Realistic, without degenerating into "Kill Porn" I based the events in my fictional story upon some experiences I had. We were required to take digital photos of the hostiles we captured or killed (to keep the "Black Lists up to date). Some individuals collected, and (enjoyed?) viewed those images, and similar ones. What I heard termed "Kill Porn" it was nothing I wished to indulge in.

Marcus and Loni, as well as other characters I am going to introduce in upcoming chapters are dealing with Wounds: Physical, Mental, and Emotional. I am striving to Show, not tell. Some of the experiences shaping some characters are in my Notes, and might never completely be depicted in this story.

Should I include Violence? Or, is War sufficient?

The Main Character (Marcus) is an Amputee, as will be some other characters. In an upcoming sex scene, coping with his amputation is addressed, but No Character "Fetishizes" his amputation. I mention in the Description of the Story that Marcus is an Amputee, but since I am NOT depicting an Amputation Fetish, I am Not (currently) using that Code. Opinions?

Marcus is "mixed race" he is Black and of several tribes, most prominently the Northern Cheyenne. Several other Characters are members of other tribes, such as the Blackfoot, Crow, Nez Perce, and Shoshone. The Story Code "Indian" seems to refer to people from the sub-continent of India. Nor is there a Code for "Mixed Race" any ideas?

I appreciate any input. Thank You.
