Great moments in the written word...shackled and locked away...

"But I killed a man in Houston
When he caught me with his wife
And I told the preacher man to leave me alone
When he came to read my rights
And he said son..."

"When You Leave That Way You Can Never Go Back"
(Steve Clark, Johnny MacRae) - (Confederate Railroad)

"Ten million slaves crossed that ocean
They had shackles on their legs
Food goes bad, food looks Rancid
But they ate it anyway"

"Ten Million Slaves" - (Otis Taylor) - (Otis Taylor)

"All day long they're singin'
(Hooh aah) (hooh aah)
(Hooh aah) (hooh aah)

That's the sound of the men working on the chain ga-a-ang
That's the sound of the men working on the chain gang"

"Chain Gang" - (Sam Cooke, Charles Cook, Jr.) - (Sam Cooke)

*********

"But I shot a man in Reno
Just to watch him die
When I hear that whistle blowin'
I hang my head and cry"

"Folsom Prison Blues" - (Johnny Cash) - (Johnny Cash)

*********

"Breakin' rocks in the hot sun
I fought the law and the law won
I fought the law and the law won
I needed money 'cause I had none"

"I Fought the Law" - (Sonny Curtis) - (The Bobby Fuller Four)

*********

"Please, please don't walk away
'cause I have this need to tell you why I'm all alone today
I can see so much of me still living in your eyes
Won't you share a part of an old man's heart on the day before he dies?

Oh, I've been to China and Asia Minor on any ship that could sail
Made some noise with some good old boys, and we wrecked the county jail
I've seen the best men fall and some teardrops fall, there ain't nothing that I haven't seen"

"I've Never Been to Me" - (Ron Miller, Kenneth Hirsch) - (Howard Keel)

*********

"Red lights are flashin' around me
Yeah, love it looks like they found me
Indiana wants me, Lord, I can't go back there"

"Indiana Wants Me" - (R. Dean Taylor) - (R. Dean Taylor)

And a cogent excerpt from my story "Tommy" that is under this pen name and to which SOL yesterday (Tuesday) lodged Chapter 12.

(From Chapter 4)

"Cully, what I will do is hand you a marker, redeemable after one year from tonight for anything your heart so desires. Anything. The only exceptions are it can't be some weird-ass shit like when you wanted to rob that bank after we saw "The Getaway."

"Girl! I never said we were going to rob that bank."

"Cully, I don't want to get into this old debate. You did want me to be Ali McGraw to your Steve McQueen. We'd rob it here, then flee to south Texas and cross into Mexico."

I wasn't serious. Not really. I just mentioned it a few times. She was making more out of it than it was. And once she threatened to leave me and go back to Ohio, I mentioned it never again.

It would rear it's head again when Baldwin and his wife Basinger remade the damn thing.

We were in the deserts by then, but surprisingly I asked to go, and surprisingly she'd granted permission and agreed to go along to the theater. "Sure."

At one point, Baldwin's "Doc" is behind freaking rebar slats in a Mexican hell hole jail, his eyes teaming with tears, quietly imploring Basinger's "Carol":

"Get me out of here."

"The ever-present Katie-Girl leaned over: 'See, Cully.'"
