Or why I tend to not say 'Happy Memorial Day'
This evening I was lying on the lounge in my living room watching "Jay Leno's Garage" on YouTube Red. There was a group of several restomods of woodies, were he able my brother Badger (Ed or more formerly Edwin) would love Mr Leno's show. Badger was a consummate mechanic, he loved working on engines and fixing mechanical things. In the 1950's while he was in High School ( GO WILDCATS ) he and his best friend Dick Harpple scraped together $25.00 and bought a 1920's non-running Ford Model T. I remember riding in the rumble seat. It took them a few days of working in our driveway to get the car running and they set off on an American teen agers dream, your own wheels. One of their more epic adventures took place early one summer day when they gassed the car, picked up a case of beer and their girls then set off to conquer a mountain, in this case Pike's Peak (14,115 feet). One small piece of trivia you might not be aware of is that the Model T did not have a fuel pump it used gravity to provide gasoline to the engine. This created a small problem for our intrepid tourers when they tried to climb the steep mountain road the engine would stall due to lack of fuel. Not to be deterred Badger pulled a u-turn and backed up to the top of the mountain where the travelers had a nice picnic then returned home in a more normal mode. Apparently some citizen with a sick up their bum reported Badger's problem solving to the authorities and our heroes were stopped just south of Colorado Springs by a member of the CSP and given a lecture but no citation. Another small bit of trivia the Colorado State Patrol used to be known as the Courtesy Patrol make of that what you will.
