Robert Browning was asked by his future wife Elizabeth Barrett what an exceptionally obscure passage in one of his poems meant. Having puzzled over the passage for some time, Browning gave up the struggle. 'Miss Barrett,' he said, 'when that passage was written only God and Robert Browning knew what it meant. Now only God knows.'

"Max Cady" - "She married a plumber. They wound up with a litter of kids, my own kid doesn't even know me. So, when I got out, I went to visit her.
