I am Soliciting Thoughts on Story Codes

Posted at

In my story a Sixth Generation Cowboy, I am using the Story Codes Military and War, should I be using the Story Code Violence? In the most recent chapter (3) I depicted the aftermath of a Complex Ambush, and elements of a Firefight as the Main Character's Platoon came to the relief of their fellow soldiers.

I aimed to be Realistic, without degenerating into "Kill Porn" I based the events in my fictional story upon some experiences I had. We were required to take digital photos of the hostiles we captured or killed (to keep the "Black Lists up to date). Some individuals collected, and (enjoyed?) viewed those images, and similar ones. What I heard termed "Kill Porn" it was nothing I wished to indulge in.

Marcus and Loni, as well as other characters I am going to introduce in upcoming chapters are dealing with Wounds: Physical, Mental, and Emotional. I am striving to Show, not tell. Some of the experiences shaping some characters are in my Notes, and might never completely be depicted in this story.

Should I include Violence? Or, is War sufficient?

The Main Character (Marcus) is an Amputee, as will be some other characters. In an upcoming sex scene, coping with his amputation is addressed, but No Character "Fetishizes" his amputation. I mention in the Description of the Story that Marcus is an Amputee, but since I am NOT depicting an Amputation Fetish, I am Not (currently) using that Code. Opinions?

Marcus is "mixed race" he is Black and of several tribes, most prominently the Northern Cheyenne. Several other Characters are members of other tribes, such as the Blackfoot, Crow, Nez Perce, and Shoshone. The Story Code "Indian" seems to refer to people from the sub-continent of India. Nor is there a Code for "Mixed Race" any ideas?

I appreciate any input. Thank You.

Éirinn go Brách! ("Ireland Forever!")

It must be the "Black Irish" in me that is loosed upon the world with a few wee drams of Irish Whiskey many a March 17th...

Then I began listening to Sinead O'Connor performing Óró Sé Do Bheatha Abhaile!

My Blood Sings to Battle All who would dare to threaten my Homeland!

Sinead is a Hot Mess, but what an Angelic Voice, Beautiful and Terrible (as in "The Terrible Swift Sword of Justice!")

Music can be such a Powerful force!

Now if I could only Tame My Muse to be able to Write a Story expressing these emotions...

A Deployment To Afghanistan In 2014

This is a "stand alone" short story the consists of elements of a much longer story that is far from completion. I have used the main story to practice my self-editing, while focusing upon A Sixth Generation Cowboy and a Third Generation Whore.

The main story that "A Deployment To Afghanistan" is condensed from, focuses much more upon what happens to the two main characters when they return to the USA, dealing with TBIs (Traumatic Brain Injuries), PTSD (Post Traumatic Stress Disorder), debilitating wounds, and other issues, such as depression, addiction, "acting out" suicide, and assisting fellow veterans.

In the short story I uploaded today there is only brief mentions of sex, but not in detail. The longer story has more sex, and more detail, but the focus is still mostly on the experiences of Veterans retuning back to the USA, and moving on from their experiences in combat.

There are some similar issues in A Sixth Generation Cowboy and a Third Generation Whore.

I won't be doing much work on the story tentatively titled Brother From Another Mother, from which "Deployment" is an extract; until I have posted the next 17 to 20 chapters of 2GC3GW, and likely even more of that story.

I have been Writing quite a bit, but little of it is fit for being uploaded at this time. Sixth Generation Cowboy will be my focus, but I may upload a few other short stories from time to time.

I am finally back, and will be uploading more chapters soon

I have been dealing with health issues, and technical issues; as well as bouts of depression for the last year.

Just before we all were condemned to isolation due to the "Wuhan Flu" through another author on this site, I got connected to a professional editor who offered to assist me by editing the first 17 chapters of A Sixth Generation Cowboy and a Third Generation Whore (as a one time thing). I really appreciated her assistance, although it took months, and then took even longer due to COVID-19.

When I got back the printed chapters, and thumb drive both were filled with more Red than some of the term papers I scrambled to write the night before they were due in high school! It was depressing! She also gave me a couple of books (as well as online resources) for self-editing.

I had to completely Re-write several chapters, and make significant corrections to everything else. It has taken me longer to do all of this, longer than I thought. Part of my problem was I thought I was ready to upload those chapters, and didn't realize how much needed to be corrected!

While waiting for the edited chapters to come back, I wrote some new material, and re-wrote some older things. I also practiced my self-editing skills on some of these stories as well.

My focus will be on A Sixth Generation Cowboy, and a Third Generation Whore. However, from time to time, I may upload a few of the other things I have been working on as well. I am also going to re-post the original chapters I posted as well (with corrections).

It has been a Difficult Year.

I have been writing stories for some time, erotic, alternate history, historical, military, fiction, and non-fiction stories.

I thought I was prepared to start posting several stories. I figured I had enough content to post a chapter every week to 10 days.

Then a good friend of mine died just hours after I had been doing some volunteer work with him. Three other individuals who were important to a not-for-profit organization I am on the Board of Directors of, died. We also lost two World War Two Veterans from my VFW Post. I lost a dozen people I was close to this year.

I also spent more than two months living away from my home, preparing a friend's home out in the foothills of the mountains for sale. My time for writing has been significantly effected. I have been conducting research, mostly from books, due to poor internet access, which has effected my ability to get on SOL.

I have really learned to appreciate why some folks prefer to read on Complete Stories. So, I have spent months preparing to download only complete stories. I have been hindered by not being able to find an Editor (ANY VOLUNTEERS To EDIT?). I have been able to vet some of my writing through Alpha or Beta Writers, but NOT using the format for posting here. I write using Microsoft Word.

I am trying to figure out how to properly correct some formatting and spelling errors from my first chapter.

I am also trying to figure out How to Post Chapters. I have printed out some of the guides in the authors section, and am trying to determine if I am executing them correctly.

I don't expect to be able to get back to SOL until the 5th of January 2020. I wish you All a Happy New Year, and hope to have some content for some of you to Enjoy in 2020!
