Ferg is an interesting character who sprang into my mind from a mix of Vietnam vets that I know including my uncle who was a Ranger and a LRRP (Long Range Reconnaissance Patroller) and some that I was trained by in the Marine Corps. I guarantee they are saltiest group of combat veterans you'd ever meet.

I made him a farmer because of the old military saying "he bought the farm" which was from WW1 and was a common reply when you asked a doughboy what he was going to do when he got out. In later wars (in typical soldier/marine fashion) it came to mean "He bought the farm" referring to a 6 feet deep by 6 feet long piece of land. In this case I thought it was amusing to have Ferg literally buy a farm (probably from his CIA contract money). It's also quite true that you never know what those vets brought back or kept. Things were a lot more loosey goosey than they are now ;-)

It starts out a great day for Kelly, but doesn't end well. Had to do a lot of research to get this one right. They don't teach this at OCS. It's going to get a bit dark from here on out folks.

I hope you enjoy this chapter. Much of the lore surrounding the bow is true. this type of bow is still shot in traditional competition in the Corn Shoots held during Cherokee celebrations. I've made a couple myself using black locust as I don't have easy access to Osage Orange (Bois D'arc). They are truly efficient weapons not too dissimilar to English longbow and shoot to within a few feet a second of the fastest of modern recurve bows. Compound bows shoot much, much faster, but that's cheating :-) My brother knaps the arrow heads for me out of Rainbow Butte Obsidian. And I have several made out of the rainbow sheen subtype that comes only from that area (as far as I know).

Ferg is a great character as well and based on a conglomerate of Vietnam vets that I know, including an Uncle who used a Thompson as a LRRP.
