Chapter 1 of Times 7 in the queue

This week with Times 7:

Arlene and Jeff
has ended, but Times 7 has just begun.

A calm settled over him as Mack willed every muscle to relax. Instead of trying to avoid the colors, he concentrated on them. In seconds, they popped into a clarity beyond anything he had ever experienced. Determined, he chose a faintly luminescent green that seemed more (substantial?) than the others, and he tried to trace its swirling path. As he fixed his attention on the one thread, the swirling slowed, then ceased, and with the cessation of the movement, the mounting nausea also went away. He experimented a little and found that with a mental “push,” the "thread" seemed to move linearly.

This week with Arlene and Jeff:

...I have just posted the last chapter of Arlene and Jeff. A special thank you to my editors for all their work, and to all my readers who have also hung with me through all the years. This tale started in November of 2006 and ended today, September 30, 2022. The characters have lived in my mind, and I hate to end the story, but there are other stories that I want to write about.

I hope, at some point in the future, to write a few more chapters giving some of the Matthews Clan's adventures in their travels, but then again, time might well prevent that.

Starting next Friday, I'll begin a new story called Times 7. I hope you will come and be with us on Mack's journey.

This week with Arlene and Jeff:

...After supper, several of Jeff’s wives were looking through the dress shop’s wedding dress catalog when Emma walked into the room. Susan turned to Emma and asked, “Which of these do you prefer?”

Emma glanced at the catalog and saw through their scheme – she thought. Barely keeping the snarl out of her voice, she declared that she was not in the market for a wedding dress and probably never would be.

“Uh,” Susan stammered, playing her part well, “Adrienné said she knew nothing of the ‘custom’ and asked our help in deciding which dress would be appropriate.” Adrienné had, but that was weeks ago. Her dress was bought and hanging in her closet.

Emma’s face flamed red, and she apologized. In the embarrassing quiet of the room, she reached for the catalog. As she began turning through the pages, she realized that most of the dresses shown here were, indeed, beautiful. Since she had been an ass about it, she tried her best to make an honest decision instead of just picking something.

It wasn’t long before the wives were huddled around Emma as they made comments pro and con about each picture. “If you really want my opinion, I think it would be one of these two – number 14 or number 27,” she said as she moved the pages back and forth to show each dress.

“But which one is the best?” Laura asked.

“I can’t decide. They are equally beautiful.”

Amazingly, the women all agreed with her. They thanked Emma for her input, and Laura left with the catalog.

A few minutes later, Laura reported to the Clan Queen. “She couldn’t make up her mind but said she liked both of these dresses equally,” Laura said while showing Diana the dress pictures...

This week with Arlene and Jeff:

...“Don’t worry about it for now. Instead, do you have a substantial bra or a running bra? You’ll need one for the exercises this afternoon.”

“Yes. I have both.”

“Then you might want to change into the running bra, jeans and a substantial shirt, or else partake of the General’s generosity and pick up a fatigue set in the room next door, because we’ll be on the range shortly after lunch. Also, we’ll run after our lunch has time to settle, so you might want to bring some shorts to change into, or just wear them under your clothes, which is what most of the women do. Oh, and bring or wear your running shoes.”

“I have fatigues, so I don’t need the General’s. How far will we run?” Emma asked worriedly.

“I told Mom that you jogged five miles this morning, and she said she would drop back to that for today.”

“‘Drop back?’” Emma repeated.

“Yeah, most of us usually run at least ten miles most days.”

“Oh, shit,” Emma mumbled...

This week with Arlene and Jeff:

...“Not long,” Emma responded. “I’ve been there long enough to have permanent quarters, so I just need to tie up a few loose ends, do some incidentals and check in with the Sergeant to make sure he knows where I’ll be for the next couple of years. I really need to do some shopping, but Jeff told me to hold off on that because he and Diana had discussed the issue. It seems that we will need some special clothing, and he wants her to be with me when we shop and insists that he be allowed to pay for everything.”

“So, there you go,” Nat said. “That’s one group of things that you don’t have to worry about at the base.” The three passed a glance before Nat continued. “I think what he was mostly referring to was formal clothing to wear to parties, receptions and things of that nature.”

Whitney broke in to say, “We will be looking for leads about the race that built Ship’s brain. Jeff says we will be trying to find artifacts, records or even myths from ancient history of any race we interview. Our husband doesn’t do things halfway. He says that he will try to cover all the bases, and consequently, we suspect that you will need everything from fatigues to formal wear. He has promised Ship that he will do everything he can to locate the race that built her brain, and he will do just that. Chances are, he might be using your field as well as archeology in his search because both Jeff and Ship think the race she is looking for was destroyed during that long-ago war. However, they can’t be certain, so he will search for any clues he can find.”

“Jeff told Diana to be prepared to shop for clothes and incidentals with you. You might want to pick out your wedding dress while you’re at it,” Nicki injected.

Emma turned to stare at her. “I am not getting married, no matter what your husband has said.”...
