I received some bad news yesterday. My OneDrive cannot be restored. It's gone.

While not posting, I've been writing 'erotica' since the mid-90s (yes, I'm that old). Several years ago, I transferred all my story notes and partially written stories to OneDrive because I figured 'it's in the cloud; it can't fail'.

Well, the cloud can't fail... but I can. Evidently, according to the engineers I spoke with, I did this to myself. Something I did while installing the operating system for my new PC caused IT to become the master and sync up to the OneDrive slave, basically clearing out everything. I don't remember doing the things they said but...

And to think, I PAID for them to tell me what I already knew... namely, the storage was gone because of my new computer...

I've lost a lot. Pictures from the past 20 years or so (luckily, my wife copies many of them to her storage device - you have to love my wife, she's a luddite who has never trusted 'the cloud' - so I've not lost everything but...) are gone. Hundreds, if not thousands, of stories and story ideas in various stages of completion - gone.

Typically, I'll have a story idea that I think is cool. If it sticks with me for more than a few days, I'll even write it down, flesh it out, write out characters and so on. If I like it enough at the time, I'll even start writing the story's first few scenes, just to get enough of a feel that when I go back, I can remember where I was going.

From time to time, I'll come back to the idea and flesh it out some more. Sometimes, I'll merge two or more stories into one, if the plots merit it. If I get to a point where I feel the plot is good enough, I might continue it to completion - that is where Runesward came from. The beginning idea for the story actually came to me somewhere in the mid-aughts (and it's actually merged from three different story ideas). A decade and a half later or so, and I'm writing the second book.

I'm going to be downloading my stories from SOL today, and then I'll try to re-create my notes from the stories. It's going to take a while so my most sincere apologies...

I have my computer. I have built my computer. I have installed the operating system. I have installed software. The software is broken.

I store all of my stories on OneDrive. It's secure and has been relatively safe for the past decade or more. When I installed OneDrive onto my new computer, however, for whatever reason, it decided that my CLEAN hard drive was telling it to synch UPWARDS... thus emptying the OneDrive COMPLETELY. No stories. All of my photos for the past decade and more are gone. My taxes for the past decade are gone. My life is over. The end.

Luckily, the software giant responsible for OneDrive (the-company-that-cannot-be-named) has graciously consented to restore my OneDrive. It can take 4-6 WEEKS (though they assured me they're going to try to do it faster).

Welcome to limbo. Occupants: me and anyone reading my stories.

In the event of a miracle, I will break the glass and post SOMETHING this weekend. Please don't hold your breath.

I sincerely apologize for any discomfort this hell may cause.

...and YES, I have bought an external hard drive and will be backing up my stories regularly from now on...

I'm still using my phone to interact here. Bear with me.

As you might know, my computer is dead. I'm in process of building a new one but have had trouble getting parts and had to RMA some of the ones I did get. I hope to get all the parts I need and have this beast up and running by this weekend - so, I should have the next chapter up and ready to post by August 6th.

Thanks for your patience.

2022-07-15 An update of sorts

I'm writing this on my phone, so this is going to be short. Please bear with me.

I've survived Covid relatively intact. I have a lingering cough, headaches and I still get tired qickly.

I'm still waiting on computer components to build my new computer. I hope to have something ready next week but it may be the week after. Apologies.

I returned from my trip early - but was given a departing gift of Covid.

I'm fully vaxxed.

I've had it before (mild case).

This version is like nothing I've ever seen. I've been sick since Sunday, diagnosed (self test) on Monday and I still get tired by JUST SITTING. This is not to mention the cough that STILL feels like I'm going to cough up both lungs at any time...

To make matters worse, because it never rains when it can pour, I turned on my computer this morning (first time since I returned, of course) and MY COMPUTER WILL NOT BOOT. My chip's CPU cache will not initialize even after cleaning/reseating.

Needless to say, there will not be an update tomorrow. I have to try to find a computer to buy...
