The Farm

6 Stories

The homo-sub-neanderthalus (otherwise known as "subs") were a Neanderthal offshoot that successfully fended off extinction by their homo-sapien cousins but were pushed far up north to nearly inhospitable arctic regions in northern Canada, Alaska, and Russia. Largely left in isolation for most of human history, they were officially declared a protected species by United Nations treaty resolution #23 in 1949 and available only for academic observation and study.

In 2018, research biologists working at the University of Southern California were astounded to discover a revolutionary breakthrough in the field of aging. Mixing core nutrients from the breast-milk of a female sub with commercial pharmaceuticals, the researches were astonished to find a dramatic reduction in the appearance of aging, temporarily suspending cellular decomposition as human skin cells absorbed the skin nutrient.

Immediately, the enormous commercial value was realized and U.S. industry (pharmaceutical and cosmetics companies in particular) launched a massive lobbying campaign targeting politically vulnerable government or elected officials officials to withdraw from the UN resolution on economic grounds. Within months, the United States announced its unilateral withdrawal from the sub-neanderthal treaty and the sub-ranching industry within the United States heartland was born.

This series follows the story of Bill's breeding farm, one of the first sub-breeding ranches pioneering many of the cutting edge breeding techniques as he strives to break out and become one of the industry's first successful entrepreneurs.

The Garden of Eden

The year was 2051. The era of dazzling technological breakthroughs that had catapulted mankind into an unimaginable life of prosperity had come to an end. The insatiable need for more and more of mother Earth's finite resources accelerated the Earth's climate change to unprecedented levels. World leaders publicly pledged to combat global warming while quietly prepared for the inevitable doomsday scenarios. A chronic inability to comprimise and work through planetary climate-pact deals left the ozone weakened to the point where gaping holes began to emerge on continents outside of the Antarctic.

Cancer rates and birth defects shot through the roof while fertility rates plummeted as the human population was introduced for the first time to large amounts of solar radiation. The generous healthcare and social services systems of first world nations soon collapsed as hospitals were flooded with couples coming in with all types of radiation-related illnesses.

No one was quite sure exactly how or when the worldwide economic depression started, but its swift and devastating impact it left afterwards showed how quickly things taken for granted would change virtually overnight. Unemployment rates skyrocketed as the economy ground to a halt, leaving hundreds of millions unemployed and vulnerable to the underground worlds of crime and lawlessness.

Borders and territory across the globe began to change rapidly as States with weak governance and infrastructure began to crumble without their economic backing. Singapore (now christened New Singapore) had come off relatively unscathed in the region thanks to its strategic position, small size, and strong governmental institutions.

After several years restablishing control over the region, the New Singaporean government established the Eden Institute to address the dangerously low birthrate of its population. The enormous value of males who still had functional sperm counts was quickly seen and a pragmatic decision was made by the Institute to conscript them into government service to repopulate the species. In spite of heated controversy, all males in the colony were forcibly screened and those containing at least 5% functional sperm were immediately rounded up by the military governments and forced into camps.

They were trained and conditioned as breeders...
