Our little Rose Garden get together pushed EVERYTHING off the lead for the evening news that night. You couldn't turn on anything from a local access cable news program, to CNN, or FOXNEWS, without wall-to-wall Hawk Dryden and Kevin Townsend. I bet his political handlers are sweating bullets trying to figure out to use a sixteen year old kid, to help their boss get reelected in seventeen months.

I watched myself, as Kevin, completely own the audience in the Rose Garden, and I got to see the shocked faces of the President's staff as I did it.

Having lived through being Vice President, and then President, none of this came as any surprise. I could have given Hawk lessons on how to make the most of the brief spotlight I managed to shine on him, today, but I knew he wouldn't listen.

The New York Times, of all papers, led with a front page editorial commenting on my Rose Garden moment.

"A young man of sixteen years reminded America today about who we are, and what we stand for. His words were bravery itself, considering that he alone attacked the crazed gunman who murdered President Gray. Young Kevin Townsend miraculously survived a devastating head wound that doctors have described as 'life ending, ' and recovered sufficiently to be wheeled out into the Rose Garden, at the White House, where was the recipient of the Presidential Medal of Freedom, America's highest civilian honor.

"We often scoff at young folks when they tell us who we are, and why they think it is so, but Kevin Townsend put his finger right on the pulse of our country when he said...

"Mr. President. Honored guests, and members of the press; You can see I have no notes but I will try.

"From my earliest recollections, I can honestly say that I wanted to serve my country faithfully, bravely, and with honor. When that man decided to kill the President of the United States, he might just as well have decided to kill us all.

"I never knew my parents, but I know that they wanted me to grow up in a free land, where we can achieve our best, without fear, or terror.

"Ladies and gentlemen. I am just like you. I could no more stand by and leave it to others to try to do what needed to be done, than you could.

"That's how Americans are wired.

"We stand up to terrorists. We don't step aside.

"We face down death. We don't hide like scared children.

"We take what life dishes out. We don't cry over spilled milk.

"We do our best, even when - like a few nights ago - it was not enough..."

"Mr. President. I am sorry, Sir.

"I am sorry that I failed President Gray on Tuesday night. I am so sorry that I'm alive and he died, because I wasn't just an instant faster, or a little stronger...

"America; pay attention to that voice, for it is the voice of the next generation. He represents the voice of those who will fund our social security, build our bridges, send rockets to the moon and stars, and fight our wars.

"Kevin Townsend represents the best America has to offer in the coming decades, and he does it with humility, decency, and just a touch of the boy next door, that we all miss from years gone by. We can talk about lost generations, the Vietnam War affect, and the plague of drugs, gang violence, and self-inflicted pain that this generation has embraced, or we can lift our eyes to the ones who truly represent what is best about us, like Kevin Townsend.

"Our sources tell us that Kevin will never fully recover. His head wound was devastating, but his heart is that of a lion, and lions never give up. He shared his vision of what America is, and who Americans are, then he smiled such a sad, humble smile, that we all cried for the boy who would never get to run a mile, climb a mountain, or chop down the big tree in the back yard.

"Kevin willingly surrendered those things when he chose to step in and fight the man who killed our President. He gave up his bright future, for a split second in time, when thought he could save the man who led us so breathtakingly well.

"Kevin Townsend is a hero, but he says that's because America breeds it into us.

"I say Kevin is the exception and America is better off for having him.

CNN scrolled tomorrow's editorial across the bottom of the screen, and I read their words with a growing sense of astonishment. The person covering the Rose garden ceremony was deeply moved by my speech. It bled through every line of his report.

His over-the-top commentary made me think back to that moment.

After the medal ceremony, I was wheeled back to the Oval Office, which wasn't in the plan, where I was met by Constance, Samantha, and the President. None of them looked happy, but neither did they look mad at me, so I kept my mouth shut and waited.

Constance blinked first. "Kevin, that was ... it ... it was ... you were ... I can't remember when I ... you just handed re-election to the President. We will take your speech and use it for the next year and a half, and nobody will be able to touch President Dryden, whether in the primaries, or the general election.

"I realize you have no idea what I am talking about, but you are ... it ... the bomb ... Kevin, you handed the President the front page and every leading news break for the next two days, if not a week. Please don't talk to anybody from any news service, no matter what. Leave it just like it is and we can watch it build its own momentum."

Samantha took over without any hesitation. "Kevin, I can tell you that your speech gave people a lot of things to think about, and all of them are good. You completely amazed me when you stood up and summarized everything we were all thinking, and did so with such grace, and maturity. Thank you."
