Chapter 108

The next morning, I had golf with West Lang, Stan Jenson, and Sen. Wilson. Sean went with me, in a suit and tie, and an unusually subdued demeanor. He stayed at the clubhouse while we played.

"So, what, John?" West asked as he watched his drive down the fairway. "Love Potion #9 finally wear off?"

"The boys need a day off every so often." I commented mildly.

"That's right." Stan tried to sound sage. "Having all one hundred of them at one time hardly made sense. Half the time I thought I was talking to some perverted version of Hefner." He caught the implication a second late. "No offence."

"None taken." I replied. I tee'd up and took my shot. It went a bit wide of where I wanted.

"You sure that's all it is, son?" Sen. Wilson watched with me. "Your game's been off all morning."

We moved on. My game continued to reek and West continued to give me shit about the boys. Stan and Wilson tried to steer the conversation to more pleasant topics.

"So, I heard you were the number one choice for Fairfax County's RE commission." The Senator commented around the tenth hole. "Are congratulations in order yet?"

"Nope." I sank my putt and moved aside. "I told them to get stuffed."

"Cushy job." West pointed out. "It's a sweet deal. High salary, low hours."

"So you take it."
