Angela looked at the sick man on the bed. His features were extremely different from what she remembered but that was normal considering that she hadn't seen him in 8 years. His face was very pale as if life was slowly leaving his body, his lips were white and pursed together and he was so thin that she was afraid to touch him.

The man was breathing with difficulty and he still hadn't realized that there was someone else in the room with him. He hardly seemed like the monster that had tormented her for so many years. Instead he looked frail, vulnerable. Angela was not sure that she enjoyed the sight.

It was funny but when she was little he was the only father she knew. She used to wait for his visits, thinking that he would give her the affection she needed so badly. And he was kind to her until she turned thirteen. Then her body was the only thing that mattered to him. But now she had a father, a real one and deep down she knew that she could count on him. Mitch supported her all her life and the fact that she was his daughter made her feel proud. Before they left Greece she talked to him and she allowed him to explain everything. She hadn't told him but she had already forgiven him for everything.

It was so much easier for her to forgive now that she had James in her life. She felt loved and she had no need to punish Mitch for had happened between him and her mother. The truth was that Mitch was always there for her in his way. He hadn't left her or hurt her, he had even helped James find her. And for that she would be always grateful.

At the thought of James she sighed. She had given her heart to him and he considered it a privilege. During the last days they got to know each other better and Angela realized that she loved him even more. He challenged, teased and provoked her and yet he was a solid rock, someone she could depend on no matter what. Sometimes he sang to her claiming that the baby needed to listen to some good music. Other times he fed her in order to be sure that she ate enough. Angela discovered that she enjoyed being spoiled. She had to ask for something and it was immediately hers. Living with James wouldn't be so hard after all...

John stirred and she prepared herself to face him. Having spent all her adult life running away from him it wasn't so easy now to stand in front of him.

"John?"

He grunted and then coughed in response. Angela tried again. "John? Can you hear me?"

"Angie?", he whispered. Angela had to suppress a wave of nausea. She hated that name because he was the only one who used to call her that. She decided that she wouldn't last long in that room.

"You wanted to see me?", she said sounding cold as ice.

His hand searched for her own. He squeezed her gently and she felt sick again. "You came. You came to see me", he whispered.

"What do you really want John?"

"I want", he began but he couldn't say the next words because he started coughing again.

"My forgiveness? The chance to go to Heaven? Absolution? What the fuck do you want?"

He opened his eyes, those icy, ruthless, green eyes that betrayed his cruelty and tried to focus on her face. "Angie I'm sorry".

Angela laughed and it sounded inhuman even to her own eyes. "That's a surprise", she replied.

"I can't see you", he whispered and his voice was hoarse. "Turn on the lights".

"You're in no position to give orders. I don't need the lights".

"I'm dying", he said but she didn't even blink. "I have hurt you and your mother and..."

"And Nick", she added before he could go on.

"He tried to find you. I promised that if he brought you here I would leave everything to him".

That explained a lot, Angela thought. Nick always needed money and he would do anything to get it. And if it meant that he had to hurt her in the process...

"Nick ... It isn't his fault".

"No. It's yours", she said bluntly. "But that's no excuse for the fact that he put me in a hospital two weeks ago".

John's eyes opened wide in shock. Whatever he expected to hear it wasn't it. He coughed violently and it took him a while to calm himself.

"He takes after you. You used to hit my mother, he hits me. As simple as that".

"I was a bastard. I did everything I could to hurt her, to punish her because..." He paused and she waited patiently. "Because she didn't love me. She married me because she got pregnant. Nick was the only reason and then ... Then she hated me so much that she slept with that Greek-"

"That Greek is my father", she cut him. "And you are the reason she never married him. You took Nick from her so that she wouldn't leave".

"But she did leave", he said. "Those months that you stayed with me when you ... She lied to you. It wasn't that she couldn't find a job. She tried to go away from me, to start a new life even if it meant leaving you behind".

"That's a lie", she yelled. Her mother whom she adored couldn't possibly have done such a thing. He was trying to hurt her, to make her suffer once more.

"It isn't. I took you because I knew that she would come back. She couldn't live without you and I knew it".

"I don't believe you", she panted. She was breathing hard and fast now. Surely he was enjoying this torture but she wouldn't stay and listen to his bullshit any longer.

"I have no reason to lie", he countered. "I wanted you to know why your mother left you. She was the reason why you and Nick spent those months with me", he laughed. "And if she could hear us right now she would die out of shame".

"Do you hate her so much?", she asked. When he nodded she made her decision. "My mother was only human. She made mistakes and paid for them. I know because I have paid for my own. But she loved us and she sacrificed her happiness for me and Nick. Even if she did leave for a while I don't care. She came back and that's the only thing that matters to me. I refuse to suffer for stuff that happened so many years ago. Nick suffers enough for the both of us. Only God knows what will become of him. Anyway, I managed to do what my mother couldn't". She looked at him through the darkness and smiled. "I escaped from you. I love myself, I love my life and most of all I love a man who is nothing like you. With him I will be complete and happy unlike my poor mother. So you see there is no need to ask for my forgiveness".
