Monday morning one of the third period Canoeing Merit Badge kids showed up just as the second period finished. He found a seat at the picnic table, pulled a magazine out of his backpack and started reading while he waited for the start of class. I looked the kid over. He probably was about thirteen. He was dressed in a Penn State #6 Hayes football jersey. I noticed he was reading the College Football News magazine article about Zack Hayes and the rest of our team.

I decided to have a little fun. I asked, "Are you a Penn State fan?"

"Yeah!" he answered enthusiastically. "They're the best. Did you know that their quarterback is from Lancaster County? He only lives about ten miles from my house."

"Zack Hayes is an excellent quarterback," I answered.

"Do you watch their games?" the kid asked.

I smiled and answered, "Yes, you could say I follow the Nittany Lions games very closely."

The kid went back to reading the article. I knew that the third page had pictures of our best receivers, including me. I was waiting to see the look on the kid's face when he connected all the dots and realized who I was.

I was disappointed when the kid read through the third page and flipped to the fourth page of the article without recognizing me. I guess I look different in scout uniform instead of pads and a football uniform.

I started class when the rest of my would-be canoeists arrived and it was eleven o'clock. I saw the light click on in the kid's head when I announced to the class, "I'm Kyle Martin and this is Canoeing Merit Badge."

He tentatively raised his hand. I acknowledged him. He asked, "Are you really THE Kyle Martin?" He held up his magazine and pointed at my picture. "This one?"

I smiled and nodded my head. "That's me. I play football for the Lions." More of the class realized what we were talking about. They stared expectantly at me.

I switched to my serious face. "For the next fifty minutes, I am your canoeing instructor. When class is over I will happily talk to any of you about football, the Nittany Lions or anything else. Until then, everyone focuses on canoeing – is that a deal?"

My class readily agreed to concentrate on their merit badge until class was over. I went through the parts of a canoe and canoe paddle and then sent the kids out onto the water to start learning the strokes I demonstrated while my CIT served as lookout.

Half the kids in the class stayed around after class was over to hear more about my experiences in football. The kid in the Hayes jersey, Josh Westbrook, gushed, "I can't believe you really know Zack Hayes!"

I assured Josh and the others that I really knew Zack. I patiently answered their questions about last season, the Rose Bowl, and the Blue and White Game. The kids finally ran out of questions after about ten minutes.

Josh summed up the groups feelings. "You are so lucky to know somebody as big as Zach Hayes. He's just the best quarterback in the world!"

"Don't put Zack on too tall a pedestal guys," I replied. "Zack is an excellent quarterback but he isn't that much different from you guys. Zack was just like you a few years ago when he came to this camp. He was probably thirteen or fourteen when he took Canoeing Merit Badge here."

"He took canoeing here at this lake – for real?" Timmy asked. Timmy was one of the other Penn State fans crowding around me.

I nodded yes and explained, "That shows you what you can do when you set a goal for yourself, work hard and sacrifice to attain your goal. I learned that from Zack."

"I'd sure like to meet him," Josh replied.

"What do you do sixth periods?" I asked.

"I plan to go to the free swim at the pool," Josh replied.

"Let me make a phone call," I said. "Maybe I can get Zack to stop by some day on his way to visit his girlfriend. She lives a few miles from here in Shaefferstown. I see him going past the camp two or three times a week."

"Really?" Josh asked, looking at me with wide eyes. "You could do that?"

"I'll call Zack and ask," I replied. "I'll let you know at class tomorrow if he is able to do it sometime this week."

The guys thanked me for talking with them about Zack and Penn State. They headed back to their campsites to get ready for lunch. I phoned Zack while I walked back to the staff area. I caught him as he was heading for lunch after a meeting with Coach Schroeder. Zack was spending most of the week in State College reviewing plans for the season. He was coming back home to Lancaster County on Thursday night. He had a date on Friday evening with Leigh Ann. He was happy to stop by the lake on his way to Schaefferstown to talk with his young fans.

I got a disturbing e-mail from Kelly on Monday evening. It asked me to be on-line at ten o'clock so we could chat. We had a serious problem. I found Kelly on-line at 10 pm as expected.

REDTOP10: We blew it big time this weekend Kyle.

FASTWR87: What's up?

REDTOP10: Do you remember that phone call that happened while we were fucking on Saturday night?

FASTWR87: Careful what you say. People can read over my shoulder here in the staff lounge. What about the phone call?

REDTOP10: I found out when I got home that it was from Daddy.

FASTWR87: Why didn't he talk to you if he called? Why are you in trouble? We told him you and Leigh Ann were staying in Room 212. How'd he find out I was with you?

REDTOP10: Daddy lost the room number. He asked the front desk for the O'Keefe/Bowman room. They didn't have any record of Leigh Ann or me. Daddy found out that there was a Mr. and Mrs. Martin registered at the hotel.

FASTWR87: Oh Shit! What happened? Are you grounded?

REDTOP10: No, I'm nineteen. He can't do that.

FASTWR87: What happened then?

REDTOP10: I got a long lecture from my parents about responsibility, chastity and saving myself for marriage.

FASTWR87: That's it?

REDTOP10: Daddy was very disappointed that you took my virginity. He was blunt about you. He demands to know if you'll do the right thing if I end up pregnant.

FASTWR87: Did you tell him you're protected? That you won't end up pregnant?

REDTOP10: Of course not. Do you think I'm going to tell my parents that I'm using birth control right after they find out that you and I have been having sex? No WAY!

FASTWR87: Assure your father that I promise to marry you if you end up pregnant. He will not need a shotgun at the wedding.

REDTOP10: That will appease him a little.

FASTWR87: Are your parents going to allow you to come out to my house next month?

REDTOP10: We're still negotiating that.

FASTWR87: Tell your parents that you will be sleeping in the guest room in the basement, not in my room when you visit. That may help.

REDTOP10: I don't like that!

FASTWR87: I won't be sleeping in my room either. I'll be downstairs with you. You don't need to tell your parents the last part.

REDTOP10: I'll give it a try.

FASTWR87: I love you Kelly.

REDTOP10: I love you too Kyle. I'll talk to you later.

I received a couple phone calls during the week from Anders Voight. He was having a blast staying with my family. Andy took him to the restaurant where he works for dinner one night. Anders enjoyed playing with my nephews when he was done touring each day.

July 1st came and went without any sign of my little brother or sister. Dad told Will that the doctors were going to wait a few more days and then induce labor. I called and talked with Mom that evening and wished her luck.

Josh Westbrook hung out at the lake as much as he could during the week. He had an inexhaustible supply of questions about Penn State. I answered them one-by-one, but only after class was over.

Josh and the other Penn State fans fawned over Zack Hayes when he showed up around 4:30 on Friday afternoon. Zack happily signed autographs and talked about his experiences at Penn State. I had to chase the kids back to their campsites at five pm. Zack needed to get to the Bowmans before dinner and the kids needed to get in uniform for the family night dinner.

Anders called me after dinner to talk. Dad had arranged for him to have dinner at with the Amos Stoltzfus family. The Stoltzfuses lived on the farm behind my house.

Anders loved the visit. "The Amish are a lot different than I imagined. The families are so close. Did you know the Stoltzfuses have three generations living together? We don't do anything like that in my family."

"The Amish cherish family," I agreed. "How was the food?"

"Starchy," Anders answered, laughing. "Meat, mashed potatoes, bread stuffing, corn, rolls. Don't get me wrong – the food was great, but man, I've never eaten so many starches at one sitting."

"You enjoyed the evening?" I asked.

"Hell, yeah," Anders answered. "It was great. I have one question – do the Stoltzfuses believe in bathing? The body odor was intense. Are all Amish families like that?"

I chuckled. "Amish don't believe in bathing quite as often as we do. They take a bath every Saturday night to get ready for church on Sunday, whether they need it or not."

"You're kidding!" Anders exclaimed.

"No, I'm not," I countered. "You got the intense introduction to Amish culture. It wouldn't be nearly as bad if you had dinner with them on Monday or Tuesday."

"Thanks for lining things up for me to stay with your family," Anders said. "Your family has made this week so much fun."

"I'm glad you enjoyed it." I replied. "I guess I'll see back on campus in a month."

"Back at campus," Ander agreed. "'til then."

I received good news from Kelly in my Friday evening e-mail. Mr. O'Keefe decided that a shotgun was not needed if I was serious about his daughter and her happiness. Kelly would be allowed to come to Paradise for a long weekend before I went back to school for football camp.

--oooOooo--

I was surprised Sunday morning to wake up to the sound of my cell phone ringing. I glanced at my watch before answering it. It was a few minutes after six in the morning.

"Yeah?" I said groggily.

"Hey man, sorry to wake this early," the voice said. I recognized the voice after a moment's thought.

"What's up, Anders?" I asked.

"I wasn't sure if you heard the news yet," Anders explained. "Your dad took your mom to the hospital in the middle of the night. The baby is coming."

"It's about time," I said. "Have you heard any more news?"

"No," Anders answered. "I'm here with Andy and Liz. We're waiting for your grandmother to get here to watch the twins. I have to leave in half an hour to go to the airport. Liz and Andy are going to hospital as soon as they can."

"Thanks for calling, man," I replied. "Have a good flight home."

Anders said good bye. I tried to get back to sleep but couldn't. I didn't get more news until breakfast time. Will called me to the head table right after the chaplain said grace for breakfast.

"Did you hear the news, Kyle?" Will asked.

"Just a little," I said. "Did Mom have the baby yet?"

"Yes," Will replied. "We have a brand new brother. Mom and Dad named him Hunter Allen Martin. He was born at 4:55 am, measures 21 ½ inches and weighs 7 pounds, 9 ounces."

"How's Mom?" I asked.

"Mom's fine. Dad's ecstatic. Everything is copasetic." Will explained. "I set things up with John. He is going to give us time off tonight after we finish the swim tests. You, Abby and I can visit the hospital after we process all the new campers. You interested in going?"

"Hell yeah, Will," I exclaimed. "Count me in."

I was a little distracted as I worked with the other staff members after breakfast to help the cub scouts and their parents get packed for home and then to run the closing games before the flag ceremony and dismissal for the cubs. The cubs and their parents cleared the parking lot and went home by 10:30 am.

Ed, Trent, Dustin, Matt, Cody, Dave and I went to the parade field to pass the football around to kill the time until lunch. Ed and I packed our essentials up after that. This week our troop was coming to camp. We debated a little, but decided to move to our troop's campsite for the week like we had other years. We didn't have close friends among the scouts in the troop anymore – it was all younger kids now. We decided we shouldn't break with five years of tradition.

After lunch the aquatics staff headed to the pool to wait for the campers to arrive for their swim tests. I talked with Cody Stevens. He was my CIT for the week and would handle sign-ups for Canoeing Merit Badge after dinner while I was visiting Mom and my new baby brother.

Our troop, Troop 312, was one of the first to show up at the pool for swim tests. I greeted the guys warmly as they lined up for the test. Danny Hornberger was acting as SPL this summer. Danny was going to be a junior in the fall. He normally was Eric Connell's assistant senior patrol leader. Danny was running the troop this summer since Eric was working on staff.

I gave Gary Harrison a high-five when I saw him. I talked with the younger guys a little, to calm them down and get them ready for their test. I made sure Mr. Clark, our scoutmaster, knew Ed and I needed a tent for the week. He promised to save us room at camp.

Trent's troop from Manheim came to the pool about twenty minutes later. Josh, Christian's little brother in the lead.

"You here as a camper this week?" I asked.

"Yep," Josh confirmed. "I'll be back in two weeks to work for the rest of the summer."

"How's your brother doing?" I asked.

"Good..." Josh replied. " ... but you can ask him yourself. He's here this week." Josh pointed back past the thirty-some kids and leaders to the end of his troop's line. Christian gave me a big smile and wave when I spotted him.

"Are you going to work out with us after lunch?" I asked. Josh had practiced passing with our group during staff week.

"Absolutely!" Josh answered enthusiastically.

"Good," I replied. "I'll see you later." I headed down the line to talk with my friend.

Christian gave me a big handshake when we met. "I thought you weren't coming to camp this summer," I said. "At least that's what you told me during finals."

"I wasn't," Christian explained. "My troop had trouble getting enough adults to help this week. Here I am."

"It's good to see you," I replied. We spent the next few minutes catching up with each other, talking about all our experiences since the middle of May. Christian told me he planned to work out after lunch with our football group. We had enough guys practicing with us to field a football team. In addition to the guys on staff – Ed, Trent, me, Dustin, Matt, Cody and Dave – we had Christian, his brother Josh, Gary Harrison, Ryan Lapp and Josh Strickler. The last three were guys from my troop who didn't work at camp.

The last of the 229 scouts and leaders finished their swim test around quarter of five in the evening. Will left Trent and the other staff to close up the pool for the day while he, Abby and I headed for the Women and Babies Hospital in Lancaster.

I changed into street clothes at my tent. Ed had already moved his things up the hill to our troop site. I would need to do that when I got back later that night. I met Will and Abby at their cabin. We grabbed some supper on the run on the way through Lititz.

We found Dad at the nursery window, staring at his newest son, when we arrived at the hospital. Hunter had the whitest wisps of hair on his head. He was taller and thinner than the other babies in the nursery. He had the Martin body shape. The nurse came to get Hunter for his next feeding while we were watching him. We followed him back to Mom's room.

Mom greeted us warmly when we came into her room. Poor Mom looked like she had run a marathon that day. She casually slipped her nightgown down, exposing one breast, took Hunter and let him feed while all of us talked.

Andy and Liz showed up while we were visiting. They brought Noah and Connor along. The hospital encouraged families to let the little kids visit too, so they could get used to their new sibling (or uncle in our case). The twins greeted us enthusiastically, to cries of "Unka Wiii", "Aun' Ab-bee", and "Unka Ky". They weren't quite sure what to make of Hunter. Andy tried to explain that he was their Uncle Hunter, but that didn't make any sense to the boys.

We had an excellent visit. I found out Mom planned to spend an extra day in the hospital to get her tubes tied. She said five kids was more than enough for an "old lady" like her. Those were her words not mine.

I got to hold Hunter for a couple minutes. He was so small and light weight. His fingers were impossibly tiny. Life was truly amazing. I looked forward to the day, hopefully in the distant future, when I would find out the obvious joy of being a father I saw on Dad's face and had seen on Andy's face last year.

Will, Abby and I headed back to camp around 8:30 pm when Andy and Liz took the twins home. We arrived back at camp before the opening campfire was finished. Abby and Will went to their cabin. I gathered up my belongings and headed up the hill to my troop's campsite. I waited under our dining fly until the troop returned so I could find my tent for the week.

--oooOooo--

I enjoyed spending time with the scouts from my troop during the week. I had a few scouts from my troop in each canoeing class during the day. Gary Harrison was in the second period class. I felt good that I could spend some quality time with my friend's little brother. God knows, Gary missed his brother Greg.

Tuesday after lunch some guys from my troop and some from Trent's troop came by while we were practicing football. They asked if we'd be willing to play a game instead of just practicing. The group decided some two hand touch sounded good. We split the experienced football players up between the two teams and added the non-players to try to balance things. Ed ended up teamed with Christian, Trent, Ryan Lapp, Josh Strickler and Dave. I ended up with Dustin, Matt, Josh Hunsecker, Gary Harrison and Cody.

The game was fun. We agreed no one could throw a pass deeper than twenty yards. I knew Ed could throw deep to Christian all day. I suspected Matt could pass deep to me anytime we wanted too.

Matt continued to impress me. I was used to handling balls with a lot a zip on them, thanks to working with Zack, Ed and Jay over the years. Matt's passes arrived with just as much authority as any of the other more experienced quarterbacks I was used to. Matt's decision making continued to improve too. Logan Mitchell was going to be in for the fight of his life in August when the Wolverines' football practices started.

We had so much fun on Tuesday that we played again Wednesday, Thursday and Friday after lunch. I was sorry when Friday arrived, since I knew we wouldn't have nearly enough people the next week to continue to play pick-up games. We'd be back to the usual practice routine – useful for building skills but quite boring.

I waited through breakfast on Friday for Will to embarrass me by having the camp sing Happy Birthday to me. He didn't. Lunch was quiet too. I thought for the first time since I turned eleven that I would have a peaceful birthday. Hah!

Will interrupted the chaplain at dinner time Friday night just before the scouts and their parents said grace before the chicken barbeque. Will insisted on having the nearly five hundred scouts, parents and siblings sing to me to celebrate my nineteenth birthday.

I got my second surprise while the big crowd sang to me. Dad, Andy, Liz and the twins joined me up front during the song. I gave Dad and Liz hugs and then hoisted my nephews up in my arms. The laughed and cheered "Unka Ky! Unka Ky!" as the song finished.

Mr. Holloway approved giving me the family dinner off so I could join my own family. I went through the line with Dad, Andy, Liz and the rest of my troop. We found a place to sit together and enjoyed our dinner. Andy bought and downloaded a couple albums for my MP3 player. Liz bought me a Penn State Football sweatshirt to wear around campus in the fall. Mom and Dad gave me the best present any college student could get – cold hard cash.

Dad explained that Mom wanted to come but was still feeling a little sore from her tubal ligation. She also didn't think Hunter needed to be outside all night when he was only five days old. He could visit camp next summer when he was older.

I felt a little bad for my new brother. He was going to experience a lot of birthdays away from home like I did. He had the added whammy of sharing his birthday with the rest of the country – July 4th. I promised myself, where ever I was, I would try to make sure it was a special day for him.

Will and Abby brought Dad's ice cream from the commissary building up to our troop site after the campfire was over. Dad produced a birthday cake for me (and the other thirty-one hungry scouts). Andy tried to interest the twins in cake and ice cream, but they were too sleepy. They had conked out during the campfire and slept the rest of the evening in their stroller. I thanked everyone for a great birthday before they headed for home.

--oooOooo--

The weeks of scout camp flew by. The first two weeks Dustin was my assistant at the lake. The next two weeks Eric Connell assisted me. I made sure both guys knew rowing and canoeing inside and out. I didn't want any slip-shod teaching after I left for school.

Will asked me for my recommendations for the best two CITs from the first half of the summer. Matt Sauder was my first recommendation. Nathan Bradford from New Holland was my second recommendation. Apparently Trent had similar recommendations. Matt and Nathan were called into Mr. Holloway's office and offered paying jobs on staff for the rest of the summer. Nathan accepted immediately. Matt hesitated until he was assured that he was able to leave for home in time for football practice's start on August 16th.

The fifth, and my last week, Will sent both Dustin and Eric to work at the boatyard with me. They taught the merit badges that week and I supervised. Josh Hunsecker was Eric's CIT. I enjoyed the extra free time. I worked with some of the slower learners in the rowing and canoeing classes, helping them improve their strokes.

Wednesday night Ed, Trent and I packed all our belongings in our cars, except a uniform and sleeping bag. All of us were dismissed after sixth period so we could get home and prepare for college and football camp.

Ed and I arranged by cell phone for a night out with our gang of friends back home on Thursday evening. Ed was leaving for his drive to Gainesville on Friday afternoon. Jeremy was also leaving around the same time for his drive to South Bend. Thursday would be the last night everyone would be together for at least six or seven months.

Dustin and Eric would be jointly responsible for the boatyard when I left. Will would fill Trent's duties himself while Matt and Nathan filled the open instructor positions at the pool.

I got a call from Kelly Thursday during fifth period's open boating session. She had arrived at my house and was settling into the basement bedroom. She couldn't wait for me to get home. I assured her that I was all packed and ninety minutes away from departure. I promised that if traffic was light around Lancaster that I would join her for dessert with my family at dinner time.

I waited impatiently for the minutes to tick off until my release from scout camp. I helped Dustin, Eric, Josh and Kelby, the other CIT, secure all the rowboats, canoes and kayaks when sixth period finally ended.

I turned my keys over to Eric and Dustin when we were done and jogged back to camp. I stopped by the pool office and let Will know everything was secure at the boatyard. I jogged over to the camp office and thanked Mr. Holloway for his help this summer.

Mr. Holloway asked as I signed out of camp, "Do you plan to work here again?"

"Absolutely!" I answered with a big grin. "I love it here and wouldn't miss it for anything."

"Good luck with football, Kyle," he replied. "I'll see you next summer."

I jogged over to the staff area for the rest of my things. Ed was getting the last of his things together when I grabbed my sleeping bag and dirty clothes.

"See you at DQ?" I asked.

"7:30" Ed confirmed. "Race you home."

"You're on!" I declared.

The two of us sprinted for our cars, stuffed our loose things in the back and took off. We obeyed the camp road speed limit, mostly. When we hit the highway we were off to the races. Unfortunately the race only lasted until we hit Lititz, a few miles down the road.

Traffic crawled through Lititz, Neffsville and onto Lancaster. Things were momentarily better when we got on the Route 30 bypass. That lasted until traffic backed up again near the end of the bypass. Summer afternoon traffic sucks on the bypass.

Ed was stuck in the left lane. I was in the right lane. I smiled and waved to Ed as I turned off onto the Old Philadelphia Pike so I could follow back roads home to Paradise. Ed glared back as I got myself free of the traffic jam.

--oooOooo--

It was a quarter to seven when I finally pulled up in front of my house. I was barely out of my car when I was hit by a red haired guided missile homing in on her boyfriend. I tried to return the shower of kisses and hugs as Kelly welcomed me home.

"God, I've missed you!" she repeated between kisses and hugs.

When Kelly finally calmed down enough, I gave her a proper hug and a big kiss. "I missed you too, honey." Both of us jumped when a car passed and blew its horn at us. We looked. It was Ed. He gave us a smile and a wave as he went by.

"We need to get moving," I said. "We're meeting my friends this evening for ice cream..."

"I know," Kelly said. " ... at the Dairy Queen. I talked to Jeremy before dinner."

"Good," I added. "Help me carry my laundry downstairs. I can get ready for a night out with our friends."

Kelly helped me carry my backpack and laundry bag downstairs to the basement. I said, "I'm going to take a shower," I explained. "Can you start a load of laundry for me, honey?"

"Are you sure you don't want me to help you with the shower?" Kelly teased.

"You know how that works out, Kell," I replied. "We don't have time for you to help me in the shower. We will have all night for fun AFTER we meet our friends."

"OK, laundry," Kelly conceded. I headed for the bathroom. "Slave driver," she teased as I stripped and climbed into the shower.

Kelly was sitting on the big king-sized bed waiting for me five minute later when I stepped out of the shower. Kelly snatched the towel I had around my waist when I passed her.

"Aahhh..." she teased. "I see what I want." She gave me a slap on my ass.

"Behave or we'll never get out of here," I warned.

"Tempting offer," Kelly replied. She gave me another slap on the ass. "You're right. Get dressed so we can see your friends."

I put on some shorts and a polo shirt. Kelly and I headed upstairs, found Mom and Hunter in the kitchen and said good bye, and then went searching for Dad. Noah and Connor spotted us when we checked the family room.

"Unka Ky!" "Keh-EE" They screamed as the charged at us as fast as two toddlers could go.

"They know your name?" I asked as I picked up Noah. Connor begged for Kelly to hold him.

Noah squealed when I gave him his airplane ride. Connor was smothered with kisses from Kelly. We traded twins and repeated the process. We let the boys go back to Andy on the couch when they calmed down.

"I spent a couple hours playing with the boys this afternoon. They learned to say my name," Kelly explained.

We found Dad in his study. I let him know we'd be back around ten pm or would call if our plans changed. Kelly was pleasantly surprised at how easy my parents were on the plans. Her parents would have required a timetable before she was allowed to leave. Deviations would not be permitted.

Kelly and I hopped in my car and headed for the Dairy Queen in Gap. Jeremy had lined up a good crowd of our friends that evening. Jeremy was there with Kathy. Hal and Tammy made it. Ed pulled up with Paige Anderson a couple minutes after us. Drew McCormick and Stacie Thompson were there when we arrived. Jake Kring came with his friend Morgan Wentz. Kenny Weaver came with Amanda Peterson, a girl he had dated a few times.

All of the guys were football players heading for Division I-A schools soon, except for Kenny. He had a scholarship at Division I-AA Villanova University. Us old hands (hah!) tried to explain to Jake and Kenny what was coming up this fall as they prepared to play football at this level.

Ed and Jeremy were leaving on Friday for school. Jake's parents were driving him to Syracuse tomorrow too. Kenny and Drew were leaving on Saturday morning. Hal and I were lucky, I didn't need to leave until Sunday morning to reach school on time.

Jeremy had invited Penny to come join the group that evening. She was taking a long weekend and had left already to spend time in New Jersey with her boyfriend Marco. I was sorry I missed her before I left for school.
