The church social had ended hours ago, but the kitchen still echoed with the clink of plates and the low hum of debate.
“I’m just saying,” said Hortense, adjusting her apron with a determined snort, “I have the broader surface area. I’m built for drying.”
Felix, perched delicately on one leg, tilted his head and flared his wing. “And I’m built for grace. Washing requires finesse. Look at these wings—pure precision.”
Between them, the sink towered with dishes: casserole pans crusted with baked macaroni, teacups with lipstick ghosts, and a punch bowl that still smelled faintly of ginger ale and lime sherbet.
Hortense picked up a sponge the size of a dinner roll. “Fine. But if I dry, I get first pick of the pie.”
Felix narrowed his eyes. “We split it. Evenly. Like civilized beings.”
They worked in tandem, bickering gently over technique. Hortense’s drying style was thorough but soggy; Felix’s washing was elegant but occasionally distracted by reflections in the silverware. Still, the stack shrank, and the kitchen grew quiet.
