I went into my bathroom and splashed some cold water on my face

“Hey Bro,” I heard Charles say, “Did I hear Mary’s voice in here?”

“I’ve been sleeping,” I said, not exactly lying, but it still felt like it. I dried my hands and walked past him.

“Just a minute,” he said, “I have an idea for the Love Family Singers?”

“Follow me, you can walk and talk at the same time, can’t you?”

“What’s wrong with you. Are you mad at me for some reason?”

“Sorry, Charles. I had a dream, but it wasn’t April. It was Mary!”

“My Mary?”

“Yeah, your Mary!”

“Do I want to know what you did with her?”

“Do you want to hear what happened, in my dream?”

“I’ve had dreams about girls before. For the sake of our friendship, let’s not share, OK?”

“That’s a deal,” I said, and we shook hands.

“What’s your idea, Chucky boy!”

He gave me a soft fist to my shoulder as we headed down the stairs together. He never like that nick-name!

“Some of the songs you’ve picked out might sound even better, if the girls who weren’t singing lead, sang back-up, don’t you think?”

“That is a very astute observation, Bro, thanks!”

“By the way, Charles, have you noticed how Mom and Dad have been acting lately?”

“You mean like they are, what’s the expression ‘Randy’ for each other?”

“I was thinking more along the lines of being horny for each other. It wouldn’t surprise me if, by the end of the summer, they sit us all down and tell us that Mom is pregnant again!”

“As long as it’s another boy, what’s the problem with that?” my brother asked.

“A girl would hopefully look like Mom. She could be a singer when she grows up, and a threat to the existing girls in the group.”

“How do you figure that, Michael?” Charles said with furrowed brow.

“I couldn’t give her any songs that April sang, or April would be mad. The same with Mary, June and Nancy,” I surmised.

“That’s years away, Michael. Keep track of who sings what, there is always new music coming along. Don’t worry, be happy!”

That song just popped into my head, darn him!

One of the musical songbooks we got was from the movie, COCKTAIL, which featured that very song, so I found it and sat down, to see if it looked easy enough to learn.

With it in my head, I set a rhythm near as I could figure out, then I changed the keyboard to half marimba and half piano starting to play and sing, while it all was going on... *Don’t Worry, Be Happy)

MICHAEL
Here’s a little song I wrote
You might want to sing
it note for note
Don’t worry, be happy

In every life
we have some trouble
When you worry
you make it double
Don’t worry, be happy
Don’t worry, be happy now

Oo, oo-oo-oo, oo-oo-oo,

Don’t worry

Be happy

Don’t worry, be happy

Oo, oo-oo-oo, oo-oo-oo,

Don’t worry

Be happy

Don’t worry, be happy

Ain’t got no place
to lay your head
Somebody came
and took your bed
Don’t worry, be happy
The landlord say
your rent is late
He may have to litigate
Don’t worry, be happy
Look at me, I’m happy

Oo, oo-oo-oo, oo-oo-oo,

Don’t worry

Be happy

Don’t worry, be happy
Give you my phone number
When you worry, call me,
I make you happy

Oo, oo-oo-oo, oo-oo-oo,

Don’t worry

Be happy

Don’t worry, be happy

Ain’t got no cash,
ain’t got no style
Ain’t got no girl
to make you smile
But don’t worry, be happy

‘Cause when you worry,
your face will frown
And that will bring
everybody down
So don’t worry, be happy
Don’t worry, be happy now

Oo, oo-oo-oo, oo-oo-oo,

Don’t worry

Be happy

Don’t worry, be happy

Oo, oo-oo-oo, oo-oo-oo,

Don’t worry

Be happy

Don’t worry, be happy

Now there, is this song I wrote
I hope you learned it note for note
Like good little children
Don’t worry, be happy

Listen to what I say
In your life expect some trouble
When you worry you make it double
Don’t worry, be happy,
be happy now

Oo, oo-oo-oo, oo-oo-oo,

Don’t worry

Be happy

Don’t worry, be happy

Oo, oo-oo-oo, oo-oo-oo,

Don’t worry

Be happy

Don’t worry, be happy

“Now there is a song I haven’t heard in a very long time, Michael,” my mother said applauding. “You may need April to help you hit those high notes, Honey?”

“Did it sound that good, Mom?”

“Yes, it did. You are getting better, and I hear it very clearly. Do you have a song I could sing, Honey?”

“I thought you said...”

“That was then, this is now, come on – where’s all your sheet music?”

“Ooh, I see you have some songs from that wonderful old musical, SOUTH PACIFIC ... would that be OK with you, Michael?”

“Whatever you want, pretty woman,” I said to her. “I’ve had it for a while, and already taught myself all the music, could I sing something with you, please?”

“Oh, certainly, how about the classic, ‘Twin Soliloquies?”

“A pretty song for a pretty lady, Sarah” I said, beginning it immediately.

Holding the sheet music, she began...

SARAH
Wonder how I’d feel
Livin’ on a hillside,
Lookin’ on an ocean,
Beautiful and still.
